Ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians are three professions that are compared and contrasted amongst each other frequently. Although, each can be considered a specialist of their own kind, an optician can be considered to be a “specialist who helps people get the glasses [that] they need” (cite). Whether it is to know the difference between right or wrong, good or bad and just or unjust, a good code of ethics allows individuals to hold themselves to the highest standards in any given behavior or action. It is the responsibility of the Optician to ensure that the practice site is both maintained and equipped to assure the safety and health for both the patients and the staff. Any hazardous materials on site should be stored safely and in a controlled area. Standards of WHMIS should be practice and each employee should be educated on the labels of each container, along with first aid measures, preventative measures, storage requirements and waste disposal. Infection control should be monitored on the site of practice to avoid any transmission of an infection transferring from the optician to patient, patient to optician or even patient to patient. Before beginning any sort of process with the patient the optician must ensure that they wash their hand thoroughly with soap and water for at least 10 seconds, if not possible they should sanitize their hands so that the patient is aware they proper hand hygiene is practiced. Also, any of the tools used such as a pupillometer or PD ruler or even frames, that come into contact should be disinfected before placing it on a patients
