The average Canadian watches 30 hours of television a week. Television is one of the biggest influences in media, and just one show can change someone’s life. One of these influential shows is the Oprah Winfrey Show. It was one of Oprah Winfrey’s greatest achievements that gave her the opportunity of a lifetime to speak to the world around her. She was able to help people that were just like her, and make people’s lives better. She was the first black female talk-show host, and even at the age of 60, she still reaches out to people.
Oprah Gail Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on January 29, 1954. From an early age, she was helping others around her. She would always help her grandmother on her farm with chores, even if she didn’t enjoy them very well. She already knew how to read and write at the age of 5, so she would help children in her school who couldn’t do so very well. Oprah discovered her love of speaking to others by reciting poems to the women at her grandmother’s church, who were amazed at how bright the little girl was. She always wanted to be famous, and little did she know, she would amount to be a very influential person in the media.
After her mother, Vernita Lee found a stable job, Oprah moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to live with her. She suffered from sexual abuse from her mother’s male relatives and friends, who would often buy her things so she wouldn’t tell others about what they would do to her. She was very miserable while living with her mother, and soon she had to move in with her father, Vernon Winfrey, and her step-mother Zelma, in Nashville. To this day, Oprah Winfrey is an outstanding example of how you can turn your life around and change the world around you. She is always caring to her talk-show guests, because she experienced most of their troubles first-hand, and knows what it feels like to have a hard life. Oprah is a great example of a trailblazer in African-American history, because even if she was faced with hardships, she endured them and made history by helping others. She became an idol for women of all ages and cultures, and showed the world with a little courage and compassion, you can go a long way.
