Operations Management and Efficiency I like the ocean. There has always been something fascinating about being at the beach and seeing and hearing the waves roll in. Another fascinating aspect of being at the beach are the sea animals. The most captivating creatures that I have encountered at the beach is a starfish. One of the cool things about this particular animal is that they can lose an arm, and another arm will grow back and replace the most limb. Nonetheless, this does not hold true in business. For example, if businesses were perceived as a starfish, it would have multiple arms that would represent divisions such as: operations, finance, marketing, sales, and human resources. If any of those arms fall off, it could not grow back and …show more content…
The role of the operations management arm is to ensure the company is running efficiently. It oversees the process planning, human capital, materials planning, and manufacturing processes (Slack, Chambers, & Johnston, 2010). Operations management is important because it coordinates all the processes involved in creating the products and services upon which businesses depend. It is the basis behind many of the organizational changes that affects the company. It affects everything and is everywhere – the chair in one’s home, the turkey in the freezer, and the radio station one listens to daily – is the direct result of operations management (Slack, Chambers, & Johnston, 2010).

Operations management is essential for the survival and success of any organization. According to Heizer & Render (2011), operations management (OM) is the set of activities that creates value in the form of goods and services by transforming inputs into outputs. Operations managers today contend with competition, globalization, inflation, consumer demand, and consistent change in technology. Managers must focus on the efficiency and effectiveness of processes such as cost, dependability, distribution, flexibility, and speed. The intent of this paper is to discuss the processes and operations management of the Kroger Company.
All organisations require management and management in turn, require a certain level of leadership abilities. The long-term success of an organisation depends on its ability to take advantage of the competences and knowledge of its employees. In an increasingly competitive environment, organisations must motivate its employees and encourage initiative within the organisation. This new organisational climate requires more than a traditional manager and organisations must find ways to develop leadership skills in order to increase effectiveness and to stay competitive. In any organisation leadership is often argued to be a critical factor for success or failure. It can also be said that a leader can be a manager but a manager is not always necessarily a leader (Gandz, Crossan, Seijts & Reno 2014). It is therefore vital for organisations to recognise traits and techniques that defines a success...
Operations refers to the transformation of raw materials(inputs) into finished products(outputs). The operations process is one of the key business functions and is a crucial component to business success. Like every business, Qantas is affected by many internal and external influences requiring it to have effective strategies to respond to these influences. Businesses that are able to adopt and utilise effective operational strategies are able to quickly adapt and either reduce or take advantage of these influences that impact the business. The effectiveness of these strategies can measured by Qantas’ performance and whether or not it is able to hold it’s competitive advantage. How well these strategies respond to the influences on operations will determine the level of success that Qantas achieves.

When considering the term management, there has always been a common miss conception that this automatically makes an individual a leader. Leadership is only a single element of the management role. Many times managers are more comfortable utilizing a particular leadership style. While this may work well the majority of the time, certain employees or situations may require a different approach. Good leadership requires that the individual recognize the need for change to motivate their employees to accomplish the task at hand or to reach common goals. Understanding the importance of leadership is essential. However, the key element to focus on is what steps can be taken to improve one’s leadership capabilities. For many individuals this may be a difficult question to answer and may only be possible through self-assessment and reflection.
