Relationships are complicated. There are many factors that go into a stable relationship. Meeting, maintaining and committing to a relationship with another person is stressful but if both parties put in the time and effort, the outcome can be miraculous. In the past decade, since the arrival of technology and the online world, the Internet has tried to make dating easier and more efficient by creating dating websites. Dating websites claim that they can help people find their soul mate through online profiles and questionnaires. First, online dating websites match people based on how similar their profiles are. Compatibility between two people to create a lasting relationship is not about how much they are similar. It is about how much they are different and what can be brought to the table. Also, online relationships can be a precursor to toxic behaviours such as shallowness and being judgemental. Through this, relationships will not develop properly. As well, online dating makes it easier to end a relationship, move on to the next one and skip the learning process of breaking up with someone. ...Five percent of Americans who are in a marriage or a committed relationship say they met their significant other online” (2). The reality of how relationships are started is through the traditional methods of meeting people offline. People like to meet others through introductions and referrals because it provides a sense of security. Due to the direction that society is headed, we are seeing more and more technological advances. These new advances are giving people the freedom to meet and integrate with others in the society in a safe fashion. However, we know that technology is not one-hundred percent safe proof. Because technology is not completely safe and is not always accurate individuals must use common sense to determine when a situation is not being used properly. Having children to care for and part-time jobs here and there to support my family, it took up most of my time. After the kids were settled in for the night, I was finally able to relax and wind down. The last thing I had time for was to get all cleaned up and looking good enough to go out and meet people. I wanted to sit in my sweatpants and oversized tee shirt and relax for a bit before going to bed. Another thing that made it more convenient for me was the fact that I didn’t have to worry about leaving my kids with a babysitter. With this routine, online dating made it so much easier to meet people and get to chat with them. Being able to do this was also less stressful and gave me the time to get to know the person a little more because all we were doing was chatting, instead of out at a movie or dinner and not really getting to talk as much. For the most part, you can get a good sense of who a person is and what they are like. With being able to get to know them through this type of interaction, it also makes it very easy to end the conversations if things aren’t what you are looking
With social networking services being more and more popular, it is universal to have online dating. According to a report, “over 40 million Americans have given online dating a try, and over a third of the American couples married between 2005 and 2012 met online.” This phenomenon causes us to think deeply about whether online dating is advisable or not. Because of the rapid development of technology and economy, many stressed people are eagerly seeking confidence and self-identity through the internet. Therefore, online dating has become a new and acceptable method of loving subconsciously. However, it should never replace meeting a person in real life because it may be spurious, illusory and fragile.
(Brainz) Internet relationships are typically used to identify one self. An individual will tend to find self worth in internet relationships, because someone is interested in them without seeing them face to face. Bonds are formed through commonality, emotions, and common worldview. While all of these are great things, the number one reason for internet dating is for sexual gratification. (Brainz)

With technology advances steadily in today’s society, individuals steadily advance too. One of these aspects includes dating. Individuals in today’s society hope to find companionship through online dating websites so that someday some online daters might be able to find a companion. Most of these websites even display statistics showing that one out of five relationships start online. The questions that should be asked, is this a better and safer option than looking for the one in person? Individuals tend to ignore the possible risks involving online dating. They are willing to release personal information from pictures of oneself, to locations of where they work, or live just for the possibility of finding a companion. The online users have to ask themselves: is the risk worth it in the end, or does the benefit outweighs the cost? When searching for a companionship through online dating websites, negative aspects such as profiles, self-presentation, self-disclosure, predators and sexual mishaps, may outweigh the positive aspects and cause more problems and strife then actual good.
