“An estimated 40 million Americans use online dating services hoping to meet ‘the one.’ There are more than 1,400 Web sites in the $700 million a year business, but some question their safety.” States ABC News as a reply to the question if online dating is dangerous. Times have changed in the dating world today unlike the 60’s or 70’s when people would simply go to a bar or disco to find love in the worst place. So many people each day, now in the 21st century, can log into an online dating site with the intentions of finding their soulmate, while also believing that they are nothing but safe. But what many are oblivious to is the fact that there have been murders, kidnappings, STI transmission, and theft that are the product of trusting someone you met through the internet.

This is quite ridiculous to think that someone that may seem so charming and nice online, can be so crazy in dangerous in real life. There are many other stories of men conning and “catfishing” women into thinking they are something that they are not. Women are feeling very attacked a vulnerable to these men saying things like, "Mentally, it just about broke me to think that I had been so naive, when I don't consider myself to be a very naive person," she said. "And of course, I was worried about my safety." (ABC para 9). These women have many reasons to feel unsafe and like they are not secure anywhere they go. The internet is so powerful here in the U.S and all over the world, and it is full of such truth and lies, it’s difficult to perceive which it is.
