Will Roxanne be able to get through this summer? Cheryl Foggo, the author of One Thing That’s True, writes about the life of a teenager and the obstacles she faces over her summer break. Roxanne, the main character, has been facing obstacles as she is entering the life of a teenager, from not being able to focus on studying, to finding out deep family secrets. As a book on a life of a teenager, the author shows how friends and family will always be there for you, from a small problem like scraping your knee, to having problems in a relationship. A scene in the story that relates to the author’s theme is when, Roxanne is assaulted by the school bully, Kyle Kroeger, but her brother Joel comes to save her. The author explains that Roxanne’s “mother was out of her mind with fear and worry” (Foggo, 87). This shows that her family is struggling because they concerned about Joel’s absence. However, Mr. Morgan, a close friend of the family who is also Roxannes teacher, comes to help them out in their time of worry. Roxanne explains, “so he just came. He was the first person who was calm about the whole thing. Not calm like I don’t care, but calm like everything will be okay” (Foggo, 87). This shows how Mr.Morgan is sympathizing with Roxanne’s family and is trying to help them as best as he can. Here it is seen that once again, it is friends and family who are always willing to help you though the tough time in life. Later on in the story, Joel is still missing, and a friend of Roxanne’s, Michael Barron, helps them to get into contact with Joel. In order to do this, Michael takes Roxanne to a phone booth. Roxanne says, “he had come to tell me that Joel was waiting at the phone booth in calling lake” (Foggo, 10). Michael helps the siblings to contact each other because he knows that Roxanne misses Joel a lot. Being friends with both of them, Michael understands the bond between the two siblings and helps to keep it intact.
