During the Renaissance, Europe became fascinated with ancient Greek culture, and some staged sporting and folkloric festivals using the name “Olympic Games.” It wasn’t until 1892 that Pierre de Coubertin proposed the idea that the Olympics should be a major international competition that would occur every four years. Coubertin raised the idea again at the conference on international competition in Paris in June 1894 in front of 79 delegates who unanimously approved his proposal. The international Olympic Committee (IOC) was formed, and the first games were planned for Athens in 1896. 280 participants from 13 nations competed in 43 events, including, swimming, weightlifting, track-and-field, gymnastics,... ... middle of paper ... ...llion, various factors caused the budget to expand to over $51 billion, surpassing the estimated $44 billion cost of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing which was the most expensive Olympics in history. A total of 295 medals were awarded during the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
"The summer olympics have 38 sports in total"(Great Olympic Moments pg. 4). After 28 years they decided to create the winter olympics, the first winter olympic was held in Chamonix, France in 1924. Then after 24 more years in 1948 the Paralympics were created, where disabled people were able to compete. In this event the world would gather for 2 weeks and watch their paisanos compete.
Two other important ceremonial innovations had appeared earlier at the 1920 Games in Antwerp, Belgium. The Olympic Flag, with its five interlocking rings of different colors against a white background, was flown for the first time. The five rings represent unity among the nations of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Another innovation occurring in 1920 was the first reciting of the Olympic Oath, taken in the name of all the athletes by a member of the host’s team. The oath asserts the athletes’ commitment to the ideals of sportsmanship in competition.
In 1960, after spending more than $130 Million in research and advertising, color television finally records its first profit for RCA. From a production standpoint, the one million units per year barrier are not broken until 1964. The biggest influenced T.V. on music was the show American Bandstand, first hosted by Bob Horn on a local station in Philadelphia and then called Bob Horn's Bandstand. On July 9 of 1956 the show got a new host, a 26 year old named Dick Clark.
Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states Greece. Every four years the games where started on the first full moon after the summer solstice, lasting for five days. For over 1100 years, from 776 BC to 393 AD the games where played, thousands of people ceased all warfare and flocked to a small sanctuary in northwestern Greece for five days in the late summer for a single reason, to witness the Olympic Games.
These Olympic games brought many countries together and created bonds that are still used today. Overall these games were probably very fun for all the participants and a great experience to see that part of the world. These games impacted our life in a positive way. As we all should know, de Coubertin was the reason for these games and he is a great example of why to follow after your dreams, results happen. The ‘First Modern Olympic Games’ in 1896, in Athens, Greece were a successful event that modernized our world today.
During the first Olympic Games in Athens, a mere 241 athletes from selected from fourteen countries were competing and there was very minimal press coverage at this time. In comparison, the 2004 games of Beijing reflect the increased global interconnectedness as the number of athletes shifts from 241 to 10 000, with the athletes coming from approximately 200 countries. Not only have the Olympics grown in terms of size but international media coverage has also significantly increased with the Olympic Games now being the most watched event on television with the largest global audience (2).
With over two hundred countries participating, the Olympic Games is easily considered as one of the largest multisport event known to history. The Olympics are held at a different country, and even more rarely at the same city. For a country to be chosen to host the Olympics, the country’s National Olympic Committee (the country’s representatives for the Olympics) nominates a city (from the country they represent) that they think has potential in hosting the Olympics nine years prior to when they wish to host the Olympics. It is a two year process that consists of: Application Phase, Candidate Phase and the Election of the Host City. The country that wins the election is given seven years to prepare for the Olympics.
Some cities will go to great lengths to have the privilege of hosting the world’s biggest sports event. I believe that the Olympic Movement has brought peace worldwide amongst the competing athletes. The athletes have shown determination in competitiveness while still demonstrating cooperation and respect between the athletes from different countries. This seems to have brought an international friendship during the Olympic Games. I believe this is due to regardless of your background; race or language, there is still a common ground when it comes to a sport you love.
The games provide endless opportunities for companies to improve sales, showcasing and community outreach programmes. Support from the business community and other benefactors helps the athletes and the teams promote the games. Sponsorship not only provides essential financial support to the Olympic movement but also support services such as products, technical support and staff development. Furthermore, through the promotional activities of the sponsors, public awareness and support for the Olympic Movement is increased. In 1985, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) created The Olympic Partner (TOP) Programme to diversify the revenue base for the games
