How is this method used to help produce chemico-technical products (fuels, solvents, etc).

The fractional distillation is when the crude oil get separated to a different parts, called fractions. The fractionating column is used to separate the crude oil, at the beginning the crude oil is heated at the bottom, that makes the hydrocarbon molecules to act very fast and separates from each other. Because the fractionating column have different boiling points, the consist in the crude oil allows to be separated using fractional distillation. By starting from the bottom in the fractionating column to the top, the crude oil evaporate and its vapour allows to condense at different temperatures in the column so we can get different uses of oil like for example; fuel oil, Diesel oil, Gasoline/petrol, etc. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/aqa_pre_2011/rocks/fuelsrev3.shtml

(Ke C 10,11) Refineries often use cracking to produce chemicals from oil which can be useful precursors.

Explain why we have to “Crack” long-chain hydrocarbons instead of using the products of fractional distillation directly when we manufacture plastics

Because cracking lets us turn long-chain molecules into more useable shorter ones. It always makes short-chain composites like for example ethene and propene, which have a double bond between carbon atoms. The double bond makes these composites reactive. So they can be used to make plastics. By using the cracking method it help us to manufacture plastics because if we have a long-chain molecule we can’t add then other atoms, but if we crack the molecule it help us to take the broken part and add other atoms, So take a look at the drawn example below:

Because plastics comes from oil and oil is a natural resource and it is nonrenewable so instead of making new produced plastics we can recycle the unusable plastics even if it is very costly because oil is more worth than money because money is man-made but oil is a natural resource it is nonrenewable so it is best to save as much oil as we instead of using it to produce plastics which we still have on earth and which can’t be destroyed. So the best way to plastics is recycling.
