Offshore Riches-Onshore Problems On April 20, 2010, a misinterpretation of a pressure test and one miscalculation lead to the loss of eleven men and many creatures and forever harmed the Gulf of Mexico. Somewhere between 18 to 39 million barrels of oil go dumped into the Gulf of Mexico, making this one of the worst spills in history (Malcolm). A simple damaged wellhead was the cause of this great disaster, which affected the coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. The BP spill was a wakeup call for America, allowing them to realize the consequences of offshore drilling. (Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill). EPA’s response was to make clean up organizations, but is that enough to solve the problem of offshore drilling? As the industrial Revolution began, the use of gas increased with the use of factories. In the late 1800s, a business man named H. L. William began offshore drilling in Summerland, California. The offshore wells wharves were built out into the Santa Barbara Channel. With no transport costs, offshore drilling became a popular option for many oil industries. Despite the benefits of offshore drilling, there are several downfalls. The first problem with offshore drilling occurred in 1939 when German U-boats attacked tankers in the East Coast of the US (The Environment - Where Did The First Major Oil Spill Occur). These downfalls of offshore drilling were seen through this because they affected the lives of citizens, animals, the environment and most importantly the economy.
