““Just like heaven. Ever’body wants a little piece of lan’. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It’s just in their head. They’re all the time talkin’ about it, but it’s jus’ in their head.” Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, follows in on two of the main character, George and Lennie, who have dreams that we expect might ultimately come true. It is the classic story of two friends becoming closer through the companionship and hardships as well, but a hardship too severe cost them in the end. We also meet another character, Curley’s wife, who also had faced many hardships. Being a woman at the time had taken a major effect on her but she, on her pursuit to happiness, had taken a risk too severe that had also cost her as well. All of these characters had dreams that would change their lives forever, but in the end made a choice that only brought their goals farther from reach. But in the end we see a change, a change in which the person didn’t achieve by accomplishing the goal, but the journey that they took in order to achieve it. George had made the ultimate sacrifice that costs him his own success, but we inevitably see a change that would change his life forever. We have seen it so many times, in reality and in books, where we try and try countless times to make that dream come true. In the story, we see that George had taken a risk, which restricted him from doing all the things he usually might do. “God a’ mighty if I were alone I could live so easy….An’ whatta I got, I got you!” (p.11) But soon after he realizes that it was the restriction that had been his inspiration for his dreams and his goals. George had actually genuinely cared for Lennie, although it seemed l... ... middle of paper ... ...achieving the dream, but what we experience pursuing it. We see the story of three people who tried to reach there goals and didn’t quite make it but we as readers could see the faults and cracks of these men and how that affected them. George was a guy yearning for a place of his own only to find out that he wasn’t necessarily yearning for a possession but for his best friend. Lennie wanted to give only joy to people and Curley’s wife only wanted attention. To see how foolish yet so realistic the scenario was, it helps us reflect on our own lives. Although we might be self-conceded in our own goals, we just have to come to realize that we can’t force it upon ourselves. So in the meantime, we just try our best and open our doors to let our ambitions come through, in which may ultimately result in an achievement, one step at a time. Works Cited Of Mice and Men
