The concept of life can be a very complex journey that not many are able to comprehend. For some it could be an adventure full of unexpected surprises and misfortunes, while for others it can be a walk in the park on a calm sunny afternoon. Some of us think of life as an ever changing day to day pattern, but what happens when you’re told exactly what your destiny is and that there is no possible way of changing it? In the play Oedipus the King by Sophocles the destiny of a man whose life is full of misery and despair is forsaken by the fact that he’s bound to kill his father and destined to marry his mother. Oedipus is his own worst enemy due to his choices throughout the play, as well as his tragic flaws which are stubborness, naiveness and ignorance.
One of the tragic flaws that contributed Oedipus’s downfall was Stubbornness. Stubbornness refers to the unwillingness to change your mind or opinion with complete disregard to what the situation might be. Oedipus refuses to listen to Creon's reasonable self-defense against the unreasonable accusation of conspiracy to commit treason. Oedipus accuses Creon of influencing him to call Tiresias down there and to ask for his opinion, which he believes Creon plotted with Tiresias and was the reason Tiresias called him Laius' killer. Even when Oedipus knows who he is he may not be who believes himself to be, he is too stubborn to admit he's wrong and ignores the advice of those around him. Jocasta was the wife and mother of Oedipus. Once Tiresias tells Oedipus that he was the killer of his father, he starts to wonder as to who his real parents are. In the middle of this act Jocasta impedes Oedipus to look further into his past because she knows it would only bring misfortunes as it did. Li...

...hat goes “Ignorance is bliss” (Gray), though this may be a curse, it could also be a blessing. If you just everything out and ignore all those around you to maintain a happy life you’ll be unaware of all the bad things in life, if both Oedipus and Jocasta would’ve ignored their past they could’ve at least live a happy life even though it was a sinful one. These were some of the decisions and events that prove that Oedipus was his own worst enemy.
Oedipus’s decision got him the fatal destiny that he ended up with. His uninformed decisions and his anger got the best of him, when in fact he should’ve thought about what he did before he did it. You shouldn’t make decisions in life without knowing exactly what the final outcome will be. Though sometimes is good to take risks, you must think of whether the risk is worth the reward before you follow through with your plan.
