Odyssey Reflection

When I was five years old, my education pathway drastically changed. It all began when my parents first grew concerned when I was able to recite the alphabet abnormal fast, but when later ask what the individual letter was, I had no idea what to say. I knew the alphabet song like the back of my hand, but I couldn’t tell what a random letter was. Shortly after, I went through a series of tests and evaluations that all concluded one things, that I was dyslexic.
Being dyslexic changed my entire insight into the world. I may not have realized it during my earlier years, but learning would not be easy for me. Learning was and still is a challenge, not struggle, I battle with everyday. I specifically say challenge not because of learnings possibility of difficulty, but for the amount of effort I put it to retain information rather than memorizing facts for short periods of time. For the Odyssey it was a test and project. The test would be an overview of the entire text and its major themes. The project focused on the Heroes Journey in the Odyssey. I had to identify and justify each stage with evidence for the poem with self drawn pictures to emphasise it. The project had to be independent and done completely on your own time. This project was an ultimate test of what we had learned and how we could creatively display it. People were nervous and anxious at the same time.
That project, unit, class, subject, and even year helped transform how I learn and how I work. I spent countless time and energy trying to perfect that project, and did it define me as a person? It made work harder and harder on every single assignment after it. I believe that part of my learning period was extremely crucial because it taught me to implicate good skills for my future classes. It was a small, but still important, section of my life that initiated a larger master piece that I’m still working on
