The poem The Odyssey by Homer describes the journey home of the soldier named Odysseus. Throughout Odysseus’ journey home, he demonstrates how he is not a good role model on multiple occasions. This include blinding a Cyclops, the son of Poseidon. Another example is sleeping with a witch that had just cursed all of his crew. Odysseus also lies to everybody including his family. There are many other instances of Odysseus making poor choices and not being a good role model. Odysseus’ curiosity about Polyphemus is an example how Odysseus is not a good role model. After getting stranded on an island, Odysseus and his men go looking for food when they stumble upon a cave with lots of resources. The men go into the cave, take what they want, and eat a lot of the food. Odysseus decides to have him and his men stay in the cave and wait for the owner of the goods to come back. The cave actually belongs to a Cyclops who then traps Odysseus and his crew in the cave with him. Odysseus and men now trapped approach the Cyclops and request gifts from him. During Odysseus’ adventure, in many instances, he could not reveal his true identity to anybody so he would often lie. He would lie even when it really wasn’t necessary. An example was when he lies to his own family. When he finally returns home, Odysseus lies to his son about who Odysseus is. He did not need to lie in this case for it would have not hurt anyone. No one needed protecting. He just seem to like making up stories about his past and telling people them. Odysseus’ talent for lying and making up stories demonstrates why he is a poor role model. Many of the circumstances when he is lying are not dangerous and don’t require him to lie. Honesty should not be a challenge for a leader like
