The characterization, setting, and music establishes the tense mood in the ¨Odyssey”, and it develops the theme of Odysseus finding his way home. The tense mood of Odysseus’ journey home and all the times of redirection creates tense mood for readers, and the film makes it seem more realistic. They show the in detail parts of the story that you can not imagine while reading. The setting seems realistic in the story, so that it is believable for viewers that have already read the book. The film is directly based off the book, and you can tell that it is supposed to be the same thing. They do not miss anything that the book tells, but they add more to it to create more of a plot. The characters, setting, and music make the mood easier to understand and find in the film. They make it so you feel how the characters are feeling. The characters are the ones who make is intense and tense between them and Odysseus. “Now watch me hit a target that no man has hit before, if I can make this shot” (Homer pg 1107.) Odysseus says this to make the scene tense, because the crowd does not think he will be able to do it. The readers know that he can, but nobody else does. As the new scenes start, you have no idea if the next character is going to be good or not. You hope that they are going to help Odysseus, but usually something goes wrong and Odysseus is redirected again. The characters make the redirections not get old, because they always have a new way to put off his journey. They also make things intense between them and Odysseus. They often get mad at Odysseus and cause him problems, and it is usually his shipmates who cause the problems. This makes things more tense with Odysseus. The music adds intensity to the scenes as well. It adds to what is going on in the film, because they want to add more to the story. It creates a bigger and better mood to the scenes as they go on. It is so important to viewers that Odysseus gets home, because we can see what is going on in Ithaca as well as with Odysseus. We want him to go home to the horrible setting that is happening in Ithaca. His family is in danger and need him, but he does not realize this but he does want to get home to them either way. The viewers see both settings, which adds tension and the importance of Odysseus to return home. Everytime he is redirected on his journey home the setting in Ithaca becomes more vivid to us, and we want him to go home even more. The settings of the scary island that Odysseus ends up at makes things more tense, and it makes us stay hoping that he returns home. The viewers are always rooting for Odysseus to return home, and the setting makes that more important. The way the characters treat him makes you want him to return home to Penelope and Telemachus. These characters are what makes the importance of him returning home, even more important to us. They are being treated bad because of what they think of Odysseus. Penelope had to soon pick a new husband if Odysseus does not return to that makes the mood for viewers tense. Penelope is the character that makes you want Odysseus to return home the most.
