Ocean Pollution In The Ocean

Many waste and substances are being thrown into the ocean every year; the most common manmade item found is plastic. Every year, more than 5.3 million tons of plastic is thrown into the ocean. Plastic makes up for the death of almost more than 100,000 different types of sea creatures. Currently, EPA is working on solutions toward pollution. EPA partners with many countries to come to an agreement on what to do about ocean pollution. Pollution is a very important issue to resolve, especially in the ocean, because many things like plastic, chemicals, and other products are being thrown into the ocean which can harm many organisms and ecosystems in the ocean, whether if it is by an animal ingesting harmful waste or by strangling an animal to …show more content…

According to MarineBio.org, “The most toxic waste material dumped into the ocean includes dredged material, industrial waste, sewage sludge, and radioactive waste” (MarineBio, pg 1). There are a variety of other different types of pollution that are currently in the ocean; plastic is only one factor of pollution, but there are others as well. For example, oil spills are considered as pollution. Oil spills have an effect on the ocean because many different types of fish take in the contaminated water through their gills. The oil makes its way into the fish’s system, which in turn damages the fish’s system, leading to death. Another type of pollution is sewage disposal pollution. Sewage disposal pollution is when the sewage water is not properly treated. Then, the sewage water makes its way into the ocean. Under treated sewage water contains many hazardous chemicals that bring negative effects to the contaminated area, which is the surface of the ocean. These chemicals poison sea creatures that thrive on the surface of the ocean. Animals such as geese, fish, turtles, and countless more. What all these types of pollution have in common is that all these factors play a significant role in the process of destroying the ocean. The type of pollution that …show more content…

There are many organizations that were created to help stop pollution; the biggest organization known is the E.P.A.. The actions that are being done to stop pollution is that the EPA is working with the U.S. government and other countries to find solutions and put laws to help stop pollution. According to the E.P.A., “EPA works with U.S. government agency partners, foreign nations, industry and nongovernmental organizations to ensure that international decisions and management of marine pollution issues support EPA 's mission…”(E.P.A., pg 1). The E.P.A.’s mission is to ensure that all Americans are protected from risks that the ocean pollution poses to the population. The E.P.A. has taken responsibility for trying to provide safer and cleaner waters for the American people. Some specific actions that the E.P.A. is doing is that the E.P.A. is working with the United Nations to help fulfill a program in Jamaica. The program focuses on reducing the amount of land-based pollution that gets into the ocean. E.P.A states, “EPA also works with the United Nations Caribbean Environment Program based in Jamaica, focused on reducing land-based sources of marine pollution, including in the Gulf of Mexico and the wider Caribbean region” (E.P.A. pg1). Specific steps to fulfill this is that the program involves starting other programs in the community
