Occupational Therapy as a career has been a dream of mine for a long time. My first experience within the field of occupational therapy was when I was fifteen years old. My grandma, whom I am very close to, experienced a stroke. I made numerous trips to the hospital to visit her and was offered the opportunity to accompany her in many therapy sessions. I eagerly accepted this opportunity to gain an experience in occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy. Following my grandma’s rehabilitation sessions, occupational therapy stood out to me the most. I am also patient, dedicated and hardworking. Being patient can benefit me in many areas of life including as an occupational therapist. Patience during times of failure or minimal success will push me to grow as an occupational therapist. If either my therapy sessions are not promoting the ultimate improvement of the patients or the patients are not progressing as quickly as they had hoped, patience will assist in resolving a set-back like this. My dedication to helping others makes occupational therapy a good fit for me. I have dedicated many hours to: observing therapy sessions to further my knowledge in the field, assisting and promoting independence of others through volunteering and work experiences, and my personal success experience during my time at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. I have had a variety of observation experiences in the field of occupational therapy. I have observed inpatient therapy in geriatrics and outpatient therapy in pediatrics. During my time spent observing, I was able to observe both sides of a therapy session. I learned strategies from the therapist’s side as well as received input from the patient’s side. I have a strong desire to help others and put their needs ahead of my own. I am very dedicated to the field of occupational therapy and believe that my strong work ethic and selflessness will set me up for success with my goals. My personal, educational and professional experience has provided me with the skills necessary to achieve my goals. The many hours I have put into volunteering, job shadowing, working, academics, and athletics has all benefited me in numerous ways.
