In a society enamored with the gain and worship of money and luxury, debasement of the vocation can be the only result. Even though money is a necessity in life, occupations are a tool to express the worker as a person, as well as to express his beliefs. This requires a proper attitude and outlook on life and on one's occupation. With a preoccupation for money, careers are no longer places to enjoy their passions, and an enjoyed, proper occupation is essential in a healthy, well-rounded life. Although some believe that one's career is merely an outlet for money to support a family, having a job one feels called to and enjoys is essential, because in a career based solely on gain, the worker's mindset is wrong, and the quality of his work will be hindered.
Though money is a very important commodity in life, the true career is a means of fulfillment, not with riches, but a means of bringing satisfaction to the worker. People should not devote their lives to vocation merely for the gain of money, but more for the fulfillment of the soul. When focused solely on the gain of money, all else is ignored. The thought of what to do with the next paycheck dominates the mind. A few weeks later, the money is gone, and the mind of the worker is now focused on the next payday. Money is a temporary means of fulfillment, unlike emotional satisfaction. Using your career for something that makes you happy for a week or two instead of what gives you fulfillment every day you are working is not logical. For example, it would not be wise for someone who disliked his job to keep it just because he gained a certain amount of money from it. Sayers explains that people commonly believe, falsely, that, "work is not the expression of man's creative energy in the service of society, but only something he does in order to obtain money and leisure" (Creed or Chaos 52). This example points out a major problem in common thought about occupations. The worker's creative energy is lost when he approaches and uses his career in this manner. It is this energy that helps man to express his feelings, and with the loss of creative energy, work is downsized to an outlet that feeds greed and laziness. Because of the lack of fulfillment this outlet causes, not even money or leisure can keep the occupant of this career satiated.
Thomas Carlyle, a preeminent figure of the Victorian era, said, “The real desire to get work done will itself lead one to more and more to truth” (Carlyle). Many teenagers all over the world rely on jobs to earn money to do fun activities with their friends. There are also many adults who have jobs to get by in life. Along with this, there are people who have a career. The difference between the two is that people who have a job work just to earn money, but do not enjoy it. People who have have a career enjoy their jobs and are very passionate.
Many of my friends pick their careers based on money and trade skills that they have. I am proficient in art and design, but didn’t feel like that was what I wanted to do for my career. Your career shapes a huge portion of your life. It is what you do every day, for a large portion of your life. It is what I have prepared for the past 12 or so years of my life. It is way more than just money or a skill. I wanted to do something unique, something interesting, something that would inspire me to be a better human, something that would make me feel, something that is challenging, something that helped others, and above all, something that was rewarding and made me feel fulfilled.
Choosing a vocation can be a daunting task. With the world ever-evolving, one may come across a new attractive career every year. In order to ensure optimal job satisfaction, it is vital to educate oneself about every alluring prospect prior to committing. Simple factors like the time commitment and salary can mean the difference between a content existence and a miserable one.
What a person does to make a living often defines who that person is. Because so much time and energy is invested into work, work is often seen as an extension of oneself. One of the first questions that someone asks after meeting you for the first time is about what you do for a living. The belief is that by knowing what you do, one should be able to tell something about who you are. People almost never ask the more telling question of whether or not you are happy. They rely on the nature of the occupation to tell them something about your happiness. If you are a doctor, lawyer, or celebrity, it is assumed you are happy because of the money associated with those occupations. For some, income is a determinate of happiness. Granted, money is a major determinant, but not the only determinant of happiness. Happiness on the job is better determined by the support to values that a job provides.
Application of career theories to my own life allows for analyzing past and future career decisions. Holland’s Theory of Careers states that one’s vocation is an expression of self, personality, and way of life. There is an indisputable and fundamental difference in the quality of life one experiences if they choose a career one truly enjoys, versus choosing a career one detests. A true testament to the validity of Holland’s theory, my job/career choices reflect my interests, as well as the evolution of my personality (internal self). My first job as a fine jewelry specialist and second job as a make-up artist echo my love of the fashion world. As I matured and became less fascinated by presumed “glamour” careers, I became captivated by physical fitness, nutrition, and medicine; I received my national fitness trainer certificate so that I may become a personal trainer. Nevertheless, my career decisions do not fit uniformly into merely one career theory.

Many Americans would probably argue, “We only have one life to live and, therefore, we should live with no regrets and go after what it is that we love.” I completely understand with the concept that he’s going with, but in today’s s economy we don’t necessarily have the time that chasing our passion takes. It’s act now and make money or become homeless. That’s practically what it's come to when trying to uphold with everything in the economy. Another counter argument that might be brought up is, “So because of the economy we live in today, we should use that as an excuse to not to pursue what our career passion is?” The economy we live in is no excuse for not going after what you love, but as Jobs mentions his whole ideals of doing what you love, he makes it seem as though that no matter your love to do is, you’ll be successful in the end as long as you stay persistent and hungry for your goal. You can be so passionate towards your goal but you always have to up for any rejection and the possibility of not pursuing what you want. Whether Jobs admits it or not, we know he enjoyed all the money he made and everyone loves money, but his passion made him successful for the purpose of his goal being something that was a major deal in the making of the economies
Business Insider journalist, Alyson Shontell states in her article “80% Hate Their Jobs--But Should You Choose a Passion or a Paycheck?”, “80% according to Deloitte’s Shift Index survey--are dissatisfied with their jobs” which leaves a greatly negative impression on their work (Shontell). Hypothetically speaking, if someone didn’t enjoy their job, it is most likely they would not put their full effort and commitment into the work they were doing, therefore leaving it incomplete and poorly executed. If an artist were to work a ‘boring’ desk job, the said artist’s work would not benefit them or their employer because the work would not be at the level of completion needed. The author Curt Rosengren discusses the positive aspects of working a job one loves in his article “How Loving Your Job Helps You Succeed” when he writes “Doing work you love is energizing. It creates a virtuous circle. You do the work and that energizes you, which in turn means that you have more energy to put into doing the work...When bumps, bruises, or roadblocks come in pursuit of something you love, it’s exponentially easier to blow through them than when you are experiencing them in pursuit of something that doesn’t really energize you.” (Rosengren). Rosengren describes the mental state between one person who loves their job and one person who doesn’t and how it affects their work when presented with a difficult challenge at
Every person lives because they have a purpose in this world. Emerson believes that each person has a mission to do something different and unique. This objective includes having a talent that will help them with their goal. If people utilize their talent it will be easier for them to complete their mission. Emerson writes “By doing his work, he makes the need felt which he can supply, and creates the taste by which he is enjoyed. By doing his work, he unfolds himself ”( pg. 45) Emerson is fundamentally saying that people should do what is meant for them to do and that this is what is called the Spiritual Law. In Robert Reich’s essay, “Why the Rich is Getting Richer And the Poor, Poorer, Reich states”: “One of the best-kept secrets among symbolic analysts is that so many of them enjoy their work” (World of Ideas pg. 527). Reich shows that the symbolic analysts, who are successful, enjoys the work they are doing while routine producers and in-person servers have to work hard but does not really enjoy the work they are doing compared to symbolic analysts . For example, if a person has a talent in art and that person uses his/her talent and became an artist then person would enjoy doing his work since he likes doing
...lenging to maintain balance between what you love to do and work. For instance high-powered executives can forget what it is like to have time to enjoy themselves with their family and friends, and as a result they can become depressed or their vision of life becomes so limited that all that exists in their world is work. An overworked executive may never have done laboring for money, but may have labored through difficult projects. Humanity could be different if people could choose to work at what they love and have passion for. it. They could have balance in their lives; they could grow with their family and enjoy life. Ultimately, all of us need to work; some of us do laboring jobs, and at times many of us will labor through a difficult projects. In my opinion labor is a heavy heavier or burning feeling and work can be busy but incredible productive and enjoyable.
