The Problem with Obesity Some would say that obesity is a social problem and others would say it is a governmental concern. Child obesity is a major issue and has increased throughout many generations with the economic growth and the wrong information of dietary guidelines from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). There are many causes of obesity that play numerous roles from childhood to adulthood. Obesity starts at home and is a result of parents not being properly informed about the correct nutritional values that their children need. Some fault is from the USDA and their lack of informing parents with correct nutritional dietary guidelines. Many health problems are caused by obesity. All-in-all the problems start at home and the lack of knowledge about dietary guidelines. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has always informed the public about the dietary guidelines they should follow in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. But all the information that they receive are completely misunderstood. “The American Heart Association and the U.S. 2010 Dietary Guidelines provide recommendations for added sugar intake, as it is theorized that added sugars in the diet, particularly sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), have contributed to the rise in obesity prevalence due to research suggesting that they contribute to excessive energy intake [23-25]” as mentioned by (Hedrick, 2012). Although, these sugars are recommended if children and adults consume massive amounts of these sugars then consumption of the massive amounts of these sugars can become harmful to the body. (Hedrick, 2012) also mentions “Additionally, the U.S. 2010 Dietary Guidelines suggest one half of grains consumed should be whole grains [29], due to associations with heart health [30,31]”. Obesity is a global governmental concern and issue starting from childhood all the way up to adulthood. It’s been such a governmental concern, with all of the healthcare costs and self-harming, that the governments have stepped up in order to help fix the problems with childhood obesity in schools by creating programs. These programs help children learn how to eat and stay active during school and how to do the same thing outside of school. This is a great result of helping to prevent childhood obesity and will definitely lead into the child’s adulthood. The government even looked towards fixing its food-stamp program and what foods the food-stamp recipients can purchase (Terrell, 2007). Which, this is not a bad idea to begin with because it helps prevent people from purchasing all unhealthy foods. Making sure that they get what they need although they do not receive what they want. Some people would argue that it is not right for the government to step in on certain aspects of a person’s life, but the government is concerned about all of the consequences of not helping prevent obesity in children and it would lead to less life expectancy, more health issues, and more governmental
