One of the most prevailing problems in a teen’s life is obesity. It affects between 5 and 30 percent of children in the United States which conveys there may be about 12 million teens that suffer from obesity in the United States today. According to a chart called Percentage of Overweight Teens ages 12-19, during the years 1980 to 2000 the number of obese teenagers in the United States has tripled from 5 to 15 percent. Teen obesity is caused as a result of several factors.

One dominant factor that leads to teenage obesity is lack of exercise. According to a letter to the editor of a highschool newspaper, physical activity has declined 13 percent from 1980 to 2000, while the number of obese teenagers has risen. This shows the impact of exercise on a teenager’s body. Teenagers should get at least 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise every day. As stated in “Adolescent Obesity,” physical activity is very important both in the prevention and the treatment of obesity. It is compulsory to burn off the calories gained by eating food.
