Executive Summary

Oasis bicycles is a Taiwan based company that designs and sells a variety of bicycles for both road and mountains. It is spread across four continents and also a good example of a global company. It is considered as one of the largest bicycle manufacturing company with sales around $800 million. Almost 93 percent of which comes from outside Taiwan. Oasis bicycle also faces new challenges everyday due to the change in bicycle industry and major factors affecting the macro-economic scenario. Management have further expansion plans into the Netherlands and possibly further into the US, India and Brazil. As figures suggested, the company is well placed in its business category and can take risks of entering new market. The main objective to expand in these countries is to become the leaders in bicycle industry.

Bicycle Industry in Netherlands in 2012

In 2012 sales of new bicycles reached 1,035,000. The economic crisis and low consumer confidence had an inevitable effect on sales. The number of bicycles sold was down 13.6% compared to 2011 (1,198,000). The drop in turnover was in step: down 14.8%.

However, purchasing consumers still seem to go for security and are willing to spend money on high-quality bicycles. As a result, the average amount of money spent at specialised dealers increased (0.4%) at an average of €964 spent on a new bicycle. In contrast, the average price in the total market dropped to €724 (-1.3%).

All types of bicycles have seen a drop in sales, but the electric bicycle is doing relatively well. In 2012 sales of electric pedal-assisted bicycles reached 175,000. The fact that the one million E-bikes was sold this year is further proof of the popularity of this rather new product group.

Conclusion:

The conclusion may be drawn that promoting the use of electric bicycles may positively affect mobility, health and the environment. The Dutch will cycle more often and longer. This will probably not lead to less congestion, but will result in better accessibility. More Dutch will meet the NNGB and they will also gain weight at a Lower pace. And finally a net positive effect can be expected on climate change, due to reduction of CO2 emission.

As stated before, these estimates assume a maximum effect, where possession of electric bicycles in future will be as high as possession of standard bicycles now.
