Oakridge's Physical Environment

When assessing the social determinants impacting a client’s well-being in a community, the immediate factor one notices is the physical environment. Due to the higher population density in Central London, pollution, cleanliness, and transmission of disease is a more significant concern when compared to Oakridge, as Oakridge is less densely populated. Oakridge also has more open spaces to be active which facilitates a greater state of well-being. Additionally, unlike Central London, it is common in Oakridge to see children at play road signs, and neighborhood watch programs, illustrating the engaged community of Oakridge. Job insecurity increases the level of psychological stress that may lead to poor coping behaviors as well as cardiac diseases (Bryg, 2008). Physical and mental health are more at risk during unemployment as it increases the likelihood of anxiety, depression, and even suicide (Mikonnen, and Raphael, 2010). As mentioned earlier, employment is more secure in Oakridge than in Central London which in turn, makes it a more financially stable region for Anne to live in. Moreover, employment also affects safety and security, as Raphael and Winter-Ebmer (2001) found that unemployment and property crime rates are linked together. This connection seems to be present when comparing the unemployment rates of Central London and Oakridge, as the crime rate in Central London is much greater than in Oakridge. According to the London Police Crime Map ( n.d.), Central London is one of the highest density areas for several different crimes, in comparison to Oakridge which is a relatively low crime region. The level of security significantly affects ones health as Kemeny (2003) found that having a sense of security decreases the likelihood of chronic stress and increases the chance of having a better psychological and mental …show more content…

Factors such as: schools, hospitals, transportation, physical environment, the general population, and potential work within Central London and Oakridge were all examined in order to create a holistic assessment for Anne and her family. We related all of these factors to social determinants of health, and through critical thinking, decided which are most important to Anne, Ella, and Ava’s physical, mental, and social
