Assuring OSHA Compliance OSHA compliance is of extreme importance in all work environments but especially in a healthcare setting. Healthcare workers are exposed to many significant health and safety hazards and more staff are hurt in this sector than other (US Department of Labor, 2012). Safe practices do not occur by chance and appropriate practices and procedures must be in place to ensure the safety of both staff and patients. New staff members receive this training during their orientation program. Areas of training include: blood borne pathogens, hazards communication, respiratory protection, documentation requirements as well as sharps injuries among others areas. After being trained in these areas staff are required to pass a written test with a score of 80% or higher. In addition, specialized training occurs throughout the year such as workplace violence and Nurse Safe training to equip staff with the skills they need to be safe on the job. This mandatory training program is critical in ensuring standards are maintained. OSHA conducts programmed and unprogrammed inspections. During these inspections violations may be cited and penalties can be incurred. The types of violations are: other-than-serious violations, serious violations and willful violations. Fine vary be severity but a willful violation that resulted in the death of a staff member can be up to $250,000 (Environmental Health & Safety Online, 2015). Analysis of Practices and Principles for Osha Compliance OSHA standards are expansive but especially necessary for healthcare organizations considering the potential for significant harm from exposure to pathogens and equipment. While a safety officer may be the primary individual responsible for the organization’s compliance, safety can only be achieved through the combined efforts of individuals such as the facilities manager, risk management as well as all organizational staff.
