In 2001, the movie “O” was released and the director of the movie was Tim Blake Nelson. Nelson is an actor, a writer, and a director who has won numerous awards for his acting and directing movies. The movie “O” was nominated for the Golden Space Needle Award at the Seattle International Film Festival for Best Director. The movie “O” was a modernization based off of William Shakespeare’s well known play, “Othello”. The movie “O” took place at an elite wealthy private high school. The main characters are Odin James (Mekhi Phifer) as Othello, Desi (Julia Stiles) as Desdemona, Hugo Goulding (Josh Harnett) as Iago, Michael (Andrew Keegan) as Michael Cassio, Emily (Rain Phoenix) as Emilia, and the coach (Martin Sheen). Some examples that attract teens or examples that transformed the movie for a teen audience: modern setting, music, basketball, attractive and good actors/actresses, sex, guns, drugs, violence and drama, or something as interesting. The setting takes place at an elite private American high school that is mainly for the upper class families to go to. Even though the movie made it into a high school setting, it seems more like a college campus because the dorms that students lived in were huge like it was their personal bedroom. There were parties, students were able to drink alcohol and students were able to drive. A typical high school setting sets the tone of the movie to be more casual but because it’s in a high school setting, dramas and issues between the students are more prone to happen and for certain cases, it could be very relatable to teens. The movie contains many different styles of music, ranging from rap to opera. Music enables teens to develop their own identities but in this case, music allows the sound effect of the movie to match with certain scenes and actions. It also intensify the suspense that the audience might feel. Basketball is a sport that is very important to the American culture and it brings everyone together, connecting the similarities from kids to grandparents. His greatest fears was one day he will become the barbarian that white people believe him to be, his natural violent character. In similar fashion, Odin slowly becomes the person that other people perceive him as, increasing his acts of violence and continuing to listen to Hugo’s lies without even questioning or take the time to find out the truth in a calm matter. At the ending scene right before Odin shoots himself in the movie, he wanted all of his classmates or everyone who was present at the scene to know that he is not different than anyone else just because of his skin color. His skin color and race doesn’t make him do all these violent acts but it was to blame Hugo for feeding him lies, making him question his love for Desi while being very self-conscious about his race and his no good deeds. “I ain’t no different than none of you all.
