When delving into psychological development the study of nature of nurture is always discussed. One of the greatest parts of nurture is the parent child relationship. In chapter 6 Human Development a Cultural Approach the types of parenting styles are clearly described, Authoritative, Authoritarian, Permissive, and Disengaged. In this essay I will define demandingness and responsiveness, explain how they relate to the four parenting styles, and explain how each parenting style would relate to a 13 year old child asking to watch an M rated video game he heard about from his friends. When discussing parenting two key factors that differentiate the types of parenting are demandingness and responsiveness. Demandingness refers to how much a parent puts on a child such as: rules, expectations, and enforcement of compliance. Responsiveness is more closely related to the amount of care or love given by the parent, and concern for their wants and needs. Each parenting style has a different level of both demandingness and responsiveness and that is what makes them so unique. …show more content…

An authoritative parent would be a parent that sets guidelines and explains why they are put in place. They are very loving and caring for their children, but do enforce the rules when needed. If an authoritative parents 13 year old child asked to rent a rated M video game the response would include something to the effect of: No, that game is rated M for mature and contains mature material that you as a 13 year old are not ready to hear, see, display or act out. They would have this response because it is both a firm and an explained answer, thus showing the high levels of demandingness and
