Developing Transformational Leaders in Nursing
Introduction
In order to develop strong leaders throughout the nursing industry, one must encompass various traits from all types of leadership theories. Of these theories, transformational leadership stands out the most in the sense that it helps create a strong and successful leader. Strengths Finder 2.0 encourages individuals to focus on developing themselves through strengths instead of trying to fix their weaknesses. In doing so individuals are able to develop natural talents in a way that creates a higher achieving workplace. As the role of the nursing manager, such individuals must inspire their employees to share the same vision as they do on behalf of the organizational goals. Givens states that transformational leadership is shown when individuals engage others in such a way that it encourages them to perform at higher levels and motivates them to achieve excellence (Givens, 2008, p. 2). This not only pertains to the nurse manager, but to employees as well. Throughout the nursing industry, the goal of every individual employee, no matter the rank, is the same as the organization. Healthcare workers all strive to provide the best quality of care, to ensure successful patient outcomes. In order to do so there has to be a sense of teamwork that is involved. When working as a team, each individual takes on a role and aids in the achievement of the organizational goal. If the transformational leaders among the team are unable to encourage and empower others to perform at their highest level, then the work effort put in will result in unsatisfactory patient
