In recent years, the health care system has encountered major transformation in regards to implementation of Affordable care and the role of health care reform in shifting the focus from a disease-oriented health care system towards wellness and prevention care (Edelman, “et al”. 2014). As a part of health care team, nurses has to prepare themselves for this transformation and challenges to accommodate the needs and demands of nation. In order to advance with the challenges and achieve the requirements of the profession, nurses has to immerse in adopting these changes by pursuing higher education. In 2010, RWJF joined American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) Foundation.
Having advanced nursing knowledge and being able to apply it into appropriate healthcare settings is key when caring for various patient populations (Christensen, 2011). Through my course of study I have been able to study past nursing theories and research in order to formulate a plan that is evidence based and best for my patient. As a practicing registered nurse I have discovered that patients as well as healthcare nurses need education on improving safety. In the clinical setting, patients should be educated on all topics that are related to their specific disease process or medical condition.
The aim of the report is to put forth recommendations that allow nurses to “(1) ensure that nurses can practice to the full extent of their education and training (2) improve nursing education, (3) provide opportunities for nurses to assume leadership positions and to serve as full partners in health care redesign and improvement efforts, and (4) improve data collection for workforce planning and policy making” (Institute of Medicine Report, 2010). The purpose of this paper is to review the IOM report and its impact on nursing, particularly nursing education, nursing practice and nursing leadership. Impact of the IOM Report on Nursing Education The future of nursing education is one of the main recommendations put forth in the IOM report. The report emphasizes on the need of highly-educated nurses and an improved education system. According to the IOM report, nursing education system in the last century does not meet the need for current health care challenges.

The nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with graduate education and advanced clinical training. The NP has acquired knowledge and clinical skills to diagnose and treat illness, and provide individualized, evidence-based care to a particular population (Chism, 2013). Throughout the past decades, the responsibilities of the NP have expanded and evolved due to the advances in healthcare. NPs are responsible for understanding the complex life process of patients and must integrate evidence-based research into clinical practice (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). NPs focus on meeting the current and the future health needs of the patient population.

The NLN seeks to be a leader in nursing education by setting goals and objectives. This organization plays a prominent role in nursing education by spearheading the nursing workforce with nursing certifications and examinations and serving as the main source for legislation reform.
