As a response to the case study, I will analyze the resident’s actions and his behavior. I will provide my reflections, as well as my recommendations, and describe what I would do differently to provide excellent patient care. The case study involves the IV therapist, the patient in a coma and the resident along with his team of junior residents, medical students, and nurses. Reading through it, I felt that the IV therapist was respectful, and considerate. Even when the chief resident showed his superiority over him, the therapist obeyed his instructions instead of responding to his confrontation. Sexual harassment, negative behavior, physical and verbal abuse, constitute incivility. Lack of civility at work may lead to lower job satisfaction, withdrawal from jobs, anxiety, reduced commitment, etc. (Prather, n.d.).The IV therapist verifying that it was the correct patient, is an example of civility. Identifying the right patient, is one of the crucial aspects of the healthcare professional’s job, as it is one of the 5 rights of the medication administration and verbal verification is the best method to identify the patient. Another example of civility would be the IV therapist explaining what he was doing to the patient. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), description of the procedure allows the patient to actively involve in the decision-making process. ("Importance of Good Communication in the Physician-Patient Relationship Information Statement - AAOS," 2011).In addition, using the patient-focused communication skills, such as: treating the patient as an individual, rather than a disease or a condition, respecting his or her culture and beliefs, etc., increases confidence and trust of the patient towards the care
