As novice nursing students who strive to get our skills polished and tunnel vision our understanding to if a patient has A, then it means they are B, we block our ability to fully be present with the patient; hence, we create a dialogue barrier which hinders our ability to create meaning in a patient’s life. As we excel in our skills and reflect on our own pattern, we will begin to gain insight to how we can better perform our practices and increase our general well-being; this became the window to health as expanding consciousness. Being nurse also involves us to understand what is most important to the patient, be with the patient, and form caring, loving and connected relationships with the patient in order to expand ours and their consciousness of the self. Thus health as expanding consciousness, in the concept of human science nursing praxis is not making judgement, goals or interventions, but to really listen to what is important to the patient and be with them to find meaning in the transformative stage of their consciousness. All in all, Newman repeatedly stresses that we come into the patients lives, taking along with us all we have learned in school and practice, but we need to focus on what is most meaningful to the patient. From there, we work with the patient to transpire pattern recognition to what is important to the patient and how their current health situation fits into the patient’s life as a whole.
