1. Given what you know so far, how would you answer a question from a patient (family member) when asked abut generic vs. brand name drugs. Please address the cost, availability and efficacy in your answer, citing a specific drug if you choose. Remember that this could play into adherence, so not only what you say, but how you convey this information is equally important.
2. How can the Nurse Practitioner (NP) best foster positive outcomes in patients in the primary care setting? Focus on the strengths of the NP, training, educational background and the overall role that the NP has/plays in the healthcare arena today. Feel free to provide individualized options (specific to you), cite recent literature (APA citation needed), and/or clinical "peals" that you have learned. etc. This should address pharmacology, but you can also expand your response(s) to the unique care provided by the NP in the primary care setting/Medical home.

A new drug discovered always has two names: a generic name (the common scientific name) and a brand name (a name to stand out in the market). Generic drugs become available to the market only after the patent on a brand name drug expires. Generic manufacturers usually pay less money for research and marketing a drug, since the original manufacturer has already done the studies to make sure the drug is safe. As a result, generic drugs can cost up to 80 % less (i.e. cash price and insurance co-pay are lower).
Some prescription drug plans requires you to first try a lower-cost medication before the plan will cover a more expensive drug. However, not all medications have a generic form available. If it’s medically necessary for you to be on a brand-name drug, the prescription drug plan will make an exception and cover the brand-name drug at a higher cost than its generic equivalent.
A generic and brand-name version of a medication must:
• contain the same active ingredient (the the chemical substance that makes the drug
It is not hard to obtain the same drugs from different sources so the customer loyalty is virtually non-existent and the pharmacies have to try extremely hard to sustain their consumer base.
Suppose that you are a pharmaceutical benefit manager. First, briefly assess various pricing strategies that could be used to charge employers for prescription drugs.
The role of nurse practitioner in the Canadian healthcare system is relatively new compared to the traditional roles of doctors and registered nurses, and as with any new role, there are people who oppose the changes and others who appreciate them. Some members of the public and the healthcare system believe that the addition of the nurse practitioner (NP) role is an unnecessary change and liability to the system because it blurs the line between a doctor and a nurse; this is because nurse practitioners are registered nurses with additional training (usually a masters degree) that allows them to expand their scope of practice into some areas which can be treated by doctors. Other people feel that nurse practitioners can help provide additional primary care services, while bridging communication between nurses and doctors. There are always legitimate challenges to be overcome when changing a system as complicated as healthcare,
Some patients would just simply not take their medications, other are forced to take out enormous loans that they will never be able to repay. Some might even resort to illegal acts such as stealing medications or other crimes to try to pay for these expensive drugs that they need for a quality of life. These inflated prices affects the under-served populations and the elderly the most. Most people from low income families might not have insurance and the money to pay for medications that they need to maintain their health. The elderly may not have the support and/or money they need to afford expensive
For years, the price of drugs have been held in congress because the cost of pharmaceutical drugs is the most controversial aspect of this industry. Stuart Schweitzer, a professor of health policy and management at the University of California Los Angeles, author of Pharmaceutical Economics and Policy, comments on this topic. According to Schweitzer, consumers are more sensitive to drug prices more than the price other health services. Schweitzer states, “Consumers are more likely to complain about a $50 bottle of tablets than a $500 radiology procedure, or a $5000 hospital stay”. This may be due the fact that these procedure and hospital stays are less frequent than taking prescription medication that is needed continuous. Most patients are seeing multiple doctors and nurses, that is accounting for the cost. Whereas at a pharmacy, they only see the pharmacist for a consultation and then the patient goes home to take their medication. Consumers may expect this to be cheaper because they are not receiving extensive care. To bring a new drug onto the market in the 1990s, it costed $359 million compared to $1.7 billion in 2003. Pricing of most products is usually based on marginal cost, which is the change in the total cost that comes from producing one extra item. However, this is not the case with the pharmaceutical industry because if prices were based on marginal cost, drugs would be a lot more
Nurse case management serve an important role in the hospital. They identify needs of the patient prior to discharge and help allocate resources to them as well. Case management is a collaborative process, they work with physicians, nurses, social workers and other healthcare professionals. The role of the case manager includes working to meet the complex needs of patients. They also make provisions for current and future needs, promotes quality care, and facilitates the use of appropriate allocation of resources. The case manager is also in charge of ensuring that ethical and legal issues are met and addressed for each individual patient. They need to have a great knowledge base on government, public, private insurance reimbursement policies in regards to their healthcare facility. Furthermore, they review charts and have meetings with healthcare professionals to ensure that the patient is receiving the proper level of care. Finally, they mediate and facilitate during the admission and discharge process of the patient.
The nurse is creating a four-column plan of care for a client. For which areas should the nurse prepare to document when creating this care plan?
No matter what type of coverage you have, you are going to save money on your health insurance if you always opt for generic drugs. Experts agree that generic versions are identical to brand names in their effectiveness, and are typically widely
“We can’t turn away from a patient’s pain just because it’s difficult” (chapman, 2015, p. 88). I know the path of least resistance is taking a path of ignorance. Easy, is to ignore or neglect the true pain patients experience in times of crisis. As caregivers I believe we all want to heal others or we wouldn’t be in the field of nursing, but there are only handfuls willing to be present during the healing process because sharing one’s pain hurts. As a surgical nurse, I find being genuinely present takes hard work on my behalf, not only mentally but emotionally. On a unit where patient’s needs and conditions are changing at astonishing rates, being present requires mental strength in order slow down enough to recognize the value presence
The first step of deciding what practice setting and clinical model that I would prefer. I did research and decided that a primary care provider fit my career goals. A primary care nurse practitioner is defined as a nurse that works in a practice setting the has "the provision of integrated, accessible health care services by clinicians who are accountable for addressing a large majority of personal health needs, developing a sustained partnerships with patients, and practicing in the context of family and community" (Anderson & O’Grady, 2009, p. 383). I believe my past and future education along with my years of clinical experiences has prepared me to take a novice role as a NP in this care setting. When I graduate and I am working in a clinical practice setting I look forward to continue my education through my practice by formal and informal training. I planned to continue utilizing a constructivist theoretical f...
John is a five-year-old African-American male residing in a single-family home in Homestead, FL; John resides with his 36-year-old mother, 34-year-old father, 13-year-old sister and four-year-old sister. Mrs. Jones states that John’s behavior with his grandmother is inappropriate.
In order to reach one’s goal, the goal should be well defined, firm and the individual must be completely committed to attaining it. Pursuing a career as a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner has always been my driving goal throughout all my education and training since the age of seventeen. Over the past three years working within a Surgical Inpatient unit as a Registered Nurse, I have become aware of the lack of community resources and access to health care available in rural areas. This has inspired me apply to the University of Western Ontario’s Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program for the fall of 2014. After completing my Bachelor of Science of Nursing at the University of Western Ontario, I am certain that no other institute can provide the same student experience that I was fortunate enough to obtain. Within this essay, I will first describe my understanding of the role of the Nurse Practitioner in Primary Health Care in Ontario, secondly will describe my motivation for wanting to become a Nurse Practitioner, and thirdly describe professional and personal attributes that I will bring to the Nurse Practitioner role.
We recommend two generic versions of EpiPen at lower costs to patients. The first version will be similar to the injection currently available in the market at a lower price. Mylan’s leadership team has been discussing about offering a generic EpiPen at a fifty percent discount, but the price can be further reduced as we reformulate our strategy of targeting multiple segment market. The product will be targeted to people with low income that are currently unable to afford EpiPen.
There is an increasing pressure within pharmaceutical markets to reduce prices in line with medical budgets, as well as maintaining patent expirations. Being a global brand means disturbance in the operations when the market fluctuates. There is an internal weakness in the pharmaceutical industry, which includes theft and counterfeiting of drugs, and therefore is a weakness of Johnson & Johnson. While Johnson & Johnson has these specified weaknesses they deal with, there are even more opportunities which gives them an advantage for strengthening their position in the market. They already have the strength of meeting a broader range of customer needs with their products falling under three categories. Expiring patents on brand name drugs lead to an increase in the sales of generic drugs, Johnson & Johnson could capitalize upon this opportunity. With diagnostic markets growing, this positions the company in a good place as well as new medical therapies and findings that align with some of the company’s primary capabilities. Threats the company faces is with product recalls, extreme competition in pharmaceuticals that results usually in the first to enter is generally where success is determined. With technology developments, biotech concepts might possibly move the traditional pharmaceutical methods out of the
I have had the privilege to work with an incredible nurse leader over the past two years. This particular nurse leader shares my passion for population health and case management for the support of patients in their homes and keeping patients safe and healthy. The purpose of this interview was to obtain further knowledge about the role desired by the interviewer. By attaining information from a practicing Master’s prepared nurse, the interviewer will develop a deeper understanding of the career advancement and potential opportunities that are available in the local community.
