A new drug discovered always has two names: a generic name (the common scientific name) and a brand name (a name to stand out in the market). Generic drugs become available to the market only after the patent on a brand name drug expires. Generic manufacturers usually pay less money for research and marketing a drug, since the original manufacturer has already done the studies to make sure the drug is safe.
