In school, I learned about the Holocaust starting in grade 5. As I got older, I was taught in more detail about the horrendous acts of the Nazis. However, I never learned about how the Jews actually felt and how their friends felt during that time. I think that Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is a great book to help younger students get a better understanding of what was really happening during the Holocaust but not in a way that would scar them for life but in a way that would peak their interest.
I have many reasons why Number the Stars is a good book for the younger students. It is easy to read, the chapters are not long and the ending of the book is realistic and somewhat hopeful. I also believe that students are learning about the
In The Boy in The Striped Pajamas, a young boy named Bruno is friends with a child in a concentration camp, even though he knows he is not supposed to. In The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss, some of the Sneetches have stars and some do not. This leads to a lot of bullying, but in the end allows the Sneetches to realize that the way that someone looks does not matter. In The Harmonica, the young boy that is given a harmonica uses it to help many people feel better throughout the time of hate and intolerance. The boy plays for many people that live in a concentration camp. In The Whispering Town, many of the people overcome hate and intolerance by helping the Jewish people escape. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and the many children’s books written about the Holocaust help overcome hate and intolerance in today’s world, so that something as awful as the Holocaust will never happen
Some students like the book because they can relate to the culture behind the book which is Latino. In the article by Seema Mehta it states “Teachers said the book helped connect with their Latino students, who make up two thirds of the district.¨ In Los Angeles the Latino population is high so when some students can connect to a book they´ll be more interested in reading it. The article also states ¨They felt empowered by this book¨. The students felt empowered by the book they could understand what the kids or people in the book were saying and they could relate to it.
Over one million Jewish children died during the Holocaust. They were ripped out of their homes and taken away from their families, and stripped of their childhoods. Innocent lives were caught in a war that they were not able to stop. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, he promised Germany that he would improve life their by getting rid of the one race that caused the problems, the Jews. Jews, including Jewish children, were sent to concentration camps, inspected, and if approved, were sent to work. All others would have been sent to be killed. Being sent to work did not ensure survival, children would be given very little food and water, and beaten severely, which caused their death. None of the children of the Holocaust will ever forget the experience they went through, they will always remember.
In the end, the real main question is why. Why do we study the Holocaust? We study it for so many reasons. We study it so we remember all the tragic events, from the murdering of the Jews to the liberation of death camps. Also this defineing moment in history lets us see how rasicim effected everything. Not only in Germany with the Nuremberg Laws, but here as well with the Jim Crow Laws. WWII did help us out of The Great Depression though. But the most important reason as to why we study this is so we know the signs, so it will never happen again. No one should ever want this to repeat. It was tragic all around. Thats why kids world wide will alwats study about the Holocaust.

The Holocaust is a very important time in history. With many other time periods and events, the Holocaust was quite gruesome. Five to six millions Jews were killed, making it a mass genocide. The topic of teaching the Holocaust to middle school students is a controversy that has been argued for a longevity. Many think the subject should not be taught, but there is the big question: Why not? The Holocaust should be taught to middle school students, especially eighth graders, with the thought that it was very real, the other advantages learned, and the things the teachers need to know.
When I signed up for this course, I had limited knowledge of the holocaust and was not very interested in its history. This course ended up being one of my favorites and the most informational courses that I have taken. Other Political leaders such as Mao Zedong and Joseph Stalin had committed mass murders that caused a much higher victim rate than Hitler, so my thoughts were that the holocaust was just another tragedy in human history. It is often a topic that many are uncomfortable talking about and tend to push to the side. There is a very big problem with that though, people in this generation need to know what happened in the past and be fully educated on everything that happened, in order to help prevent something terrible like that from ever happening again. Hitler’s very strong belief of anti semitism and his extreme hatred for the Jewish community was among the most powerful of causes for the beginning of the Holocaust. Also , the various political, economic, and social problems that the country of Germany was facing during the time leading up to the second World War massively contributed. The Nazi Party’s effective use of propaganda, scapegoating, and their military strength were also very strong factors. These causes therefore were the reason why the Holocaust occurred, and it had very many effects that arose from its happening. Millions upon millions were dead after it had finally reached an end. The survivors suffered vast amounts of physical and mental pain and challenges. This book is very educating about the history of the concentration camps and Holocaust. “…The spectators observed these emaciated creatures ready to kill for a crust of bread...the old man was crying, ‘Meir, my little Meir! Don’t you recognize me…you’re killing your father…I have bread…for you too…for you too’ He collapsed…there were two dead bodies next to (Elie), the father and the son.” (Page 101 of Night) Concentration camps were terrible. The prisoners/Jews were so underfed that they were willing to kill their own family members for a slice of bread. The Jews would go to extremes in order to get a bit more food to line their stomachs. Concentration camps, Gestapo, and SS transform the prisoners’ morals and their lives. “My father suddenly had a colic attack. He got up and asked politely, in German, ‘Excuse me…could you tell me where the toilets are located?’ (Night page 39) …Then, he slapped my father with such force that he fell down and then crawled back to his place on all fours.” This also shows the brutality of the German Kapos and the Nazi Staff. This book was interesting to me, but I think that anyone older than I would find this book a slight bit easy, despite the fact that the author, Ester Forbes does use old English words that are no longer used. So I would recommend this book for anyone between the ages of 12-14, and strongly recommend it at that.
This is Especially because I love dangerous and intenseful books which made this book a perfect match. I had originally not fully understood the Holocaust, and what people had to deal with. It is because of this book I have truly learned all of the facts. Number The Stars is a book that I enjoyed reading and recommend to anyone who would like to learn more about the Holocaust. The book starts off with Annemarie and Ellen Rosen running home from school. Two german soldiers stop tham and start interrogating the girls like they did something wrong just by running. They did it was a rule that all Jewish people must not run or ride their bicycles. The Nazi soldiers are putting strict rules on all jews until one day. One day can change everything even family. Peter, Annemarie's brother got taken away for buying bread and is now at a concentration camp. When I read this sentence I freaked out. “Uncle rushed in and told us that Pater was taken on the train to the camps, my heart fell (Lowry 140).This is just one one piece of evidence that made my heart drop. The book grabs the reader so much and puts the reader in the characters shoes that I was upset that Peter was dead. I can not even Imagine how Annemarie feels. As Annemarie would say “Past the Border is freedom, but there are many problems along the way” (Lowry 175). Annemarie and Ellen must hide and secretly escape Denmark before they are all dead.
