1. Fiber to the x (FTTX) is a generic term for any broadband network architecture using optical fiber to provide all or part of the local loop used for last mile telecommunications. Fiber to the X (FTTX) comprises the many variants of fiber optic access infrastructure. These include fiber to the home (FTTH), fiber to the premise (FTTP), fiber to the building (FTTB), fiber to the node (FTTN), and fiber to the curb or cabinet (FTTC). The speeds of fiber-optic and copper cables are both limited by length, but copper is much more limited. The common form of gigabit Ethernet (1Gbit/s) runs over category 5e, category 6 but only to 100m (300feet). However, 1Gbit/s ethernet over fiber can easily reach tens of kilometers.

2. Fiber to the home (FTTH) is the delivery of a communications signal over optical fiber from the central point to a home or business and allows existing copper infrastructure to be replaced. Fiber to the home is a relatively new and fast growing method of providing higher bandwidth to consumers and businesses enabling more robust video, internet and voice services. Implementing FTTH on a large scale will be costly because it will require installation of new cable sets over the "last links" from existing optical fiber cables to individual users.

Fiber to the curb (FTTC) refers to the installation and use of optical fiber cable directly to curbs near homes or businesses. Fiber to the curb is designed as a replacement for plain old telephone service. Coaxial cable or another medium carries signals the short distance from the curb to the home or business. Fiber to the curb uses existing coaxial or twisted-pair infrastructures in order to provide last-mile service. As such, this system is inexpensive to employ. The basic idea of fiber to curb technology is that suitable wires can carry high-speed signals at short distances. The twisted wire pairs or coaxial cables have acceptable bandwidth loss while sending signals only a few hundred
