After completing the Self-Assessment exercise on the Brief Calling Scale (BCS), I scored a total of 15 points out of possible 20. However, the questions were divided; consequently, the end result was more accurate by adding question 1 and 2; I have a calling to a particular kind of work, I have a good understanding of my calling as it applies to my career. Questions 3 and 4; I am trying to figure out my calling in my career, and I am searching for my calling as it applies to my career.
For questions 1 and 2 my total score was 6 points, (ranging from 2-10 points). This indicates a bit of struggle when I think that I have the calling to just one particular kind of work because I am highly interested in many things. For instance, art is a passion of mine, as I like to create/invent, paint, and express myself through drawings. This indicates how much I am engaged in determining my calling. Consequently, this is an indication that I am continually seeking to maintain/or expand my calling. As a result, this truly made sense to me because I am usually trying to fit all of my passions, traits, and likes in one place to give to the world the best that I can be. In addition, the question where am I heading? Is the question that haunts me every day; therefore, I figured that by becoming a Physician Assistant most of my characteristics would fit together. However, I am not completely sure if this is my vocation or my true calling. I have done some research to find out if I am the only one feeling this way; therefore, I came across the term “multipotentialities,” which means- people who have many callings instead of one. In my opinion, I think that I have many passions and creative pursuits, so the term fits me
One assessment cannot accurately gauge what a person should do for the remainder of his or her life. The suggested occupations from the FOCUS 2 assessment for me are not occupations in which I have a true interest. Even though I possess the skills that would help me have a successful career in that type of field, I feel like I would be bored and unhappy in such a career. After review of my skills, interests, and experiences, I decided to pursue the medical career field as my first career choice, more specifically as a physician assistant. I will exceed in this position in the interest of that I like to help people and I solve problems well. Also, I communicate well with others and I have a great amount of patience. There are various careers that fit my skills and interests, but this one grabs my attention. My dream job is to be a doctor, but this occupation allows one to save money by lessening the years of school required. Also, the pay isn’t too shabby either. I will be successful in this position due to my skills, characteristics, and values, like honesty and helping others. Up to this point, I have job shadowed at a medical billing company and I like the idea of diagnosing and helping people, but a desk job is not ideal. Also, I took a medical terminology as a class and I discovered that I like how the body works and what it does. These factors have all influenced my career goal.
The focus of my self-assessments was to help me find out more information about myself and what would be a good career for me. Even though I have made a decision about a career and have put a lot of time and money going into my career, I feel like there are still a lot of options for me. There are many different environments and different populations that I could choose to work with. In doing numerous assessments, I am hoping to learn more about myself and validate what I think that I know to be true about myself. Both career and personality assessment would be useful to me.
Personal competence and self awareness were the highest for me in comparison to the other scores. My self awareness is above average. With the career I intend to hold in the future as a healthcare administrator facing many conflicted situations, I will need to make sure I am managing my reactions to situations and people correctly. My overall score for social competence was a surprise to me in one category of social awareness. I was on 1 point off from being in the category of this is something that needs work. I honestly do not agree with the score. I have always been known to have a good sense of how others are feeling. I can tell that something is eating at someone or their mood is off. I am curious to know if only one or many questions I answered on this assessment put me in this category. Relationship management is a huge area of work for me. When it comes to handling conflict, emotions get the best of me in certain situations. This being the second to lowest on the chart is just realization. Working to build and strengthen these skills will help with my future career which will involve working with groups of people as a leader in the healthcare
Environmental and intellectual wellness were my highest ranked scores and my lowest ranked score was in the occupational domain. Through observing the other domains of wellness I believe that this makes perfect sense in relation to my lifestyle and myself as a whole. The highest scores are due to my interest and satisfaction in these areas. Both environmental and intellectual wellness had factors which I voluntarily partake in my daily life. The lowest ranked score is due to an overall lack of interest and comfort. My wellness scores do not come as a surprise to me and solely offer different viewpoints of what I think properly describes my current health.
Growing up the oldest of two, I became quite serious with duties and responsibility. I took pride on being dependable and trustworthy to my parents and grandparents. It seems that then I developed the liking of being a nurturer to others. I derived on personal satisfaction from helping others. Having an ill parent and going to many doctor appointments, I noticed my interest heightened in different test being run and the different medication discussed. This furthered my interest in learning how the human body worked. My first career choice is becoming a registered nurse. My second career choice is diagnostic medical technologist.
After scoring myself on the Dispositions Rubric, I based my answers on what I thought best described my personality. All of my answers may seem like I gave myself a perfect score; however, I realize that I still have the potential to grow in all of the disposition areas with more experiences that I get in the classrooms. My values and beliefs played a huge role in how I scored myself.
I have been always interested in having a career that is related to health and wellbeing, in fact a career that gets the university education directly involved and puts it into practice. General medical practitioner is the suitable career match for me. I have been studying science for quite a while and I truly enjoy learning more through this field. Choosing medicine as a career is not just about the university education though, suitable character, interpersonal skills and many other factors are contributing for being successful, and I was trying to understand myself, my interests and evaluate my skills to investigate if I am a suitable match for this job. The last shot for the personality evaluation was in bioscience work shop and I have found out that I am more of an artistic person who seeks independence through work and fine with team work, also creative, on the other hand people and data focus and I could find many other useful skills within this category that matches my future career. Accordingly I could be a suitable candidate to pursue this job after having related education and practice. It is easy to have a strong income while working as a medical practitioner or generally a medical doctor but it does not pay off easily as there is a great responsibility involved and it could be a very stressful job. After all it is valuable that the daily activities of a medical doctor contribute in making a healthier society and productive in a very positive way. Being productive at the end of the day for a job, is a very important factor for me to consider about my future career, and medical GP is a very best example of being productive in many different aspects.
The next three section are areas where I scored the highest on. With social and conventional, I scored almost maximum on the scale and with enterprising I scored maximum with. What was surprising, however, is while I was reading the description under social, I only highlighted a few areas which I felt described me. As I grew up I always knew what I wanted to have as a profession; normally, my idea of that great profession would change every week. My dreams changed over time along with my interests. Now, as I grow older, I understand that I must make a decision and choose the path I want to take. I enjoy learning about science and math the most in school. To solve equations and perform labs are my favorite actions to accomplish, and that’s how I narrowed down my job choices: Veterinarian, Pharmaceutical Scientist, and Pharmacist.
This was due to the fact that this assessment is a Self-Interview test. Therefore, I could do this same assessment a day or a week from now, but the consistency of my personal answers will be the same or extremely similar every time. The Self- interview intended to measure personality by asking questions that allowed me to describe myself. The questions asked overall measured what the assessment intended to measure. Therefore, the construct validity in this assessment appeared to be highly accurate. This was evaluated by examining the questions in the assessments, such as, “How would you describe your leadership style?" and “What drives you in your personal life?” The degree to which this assessment can be applied to others of a different age, race, and/or gender is generalized highly as well. The structure of this assessment allows other people in other situations to describe themselves like I did. My interest consist of realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional. My strongest are investigative, artistic, social, and enterprising. I would like to start my own business or start below someone and eventually earn taking over the company. The type of careers that appeared were mainly social workers or a teacher. Personally, I never considered being a social worker because I do not really have an interest in working with the law. I am surprised about the low rating for realistic because I rather do hands-on and face to face situations rather than just sitting behind a desk. Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Upon entering my career, I had assumed that professional and financial success would surely bring personal fulfillment. This realization triggered a process of self-searching that led me to medicine. The commitment to provide others with healthcare is a serious decision for anyone. As I examined my interests and goals, however, I underwent a process of personal growth that has propelled me towards a career as a physician. A career in medicine will allow me to integrate thoroughly my passion for science into a public-service framework.
