Lesson 2: Teaching Your Puppy to Sit Down

Even if your dog already knows how to sit on verbal command, please don't skip this lesson. We assure she will quickly learn something new!

The method you will utilize to teach your puppy to sit is known as the "bait and reward" procedure. You will lure your pet into a sitting position, then instantly reward her. It is a popular procedure as it is effective, simple that you do, and easy for your dog to master.

A great "side effect" of this process is that it enables a natural motion to become a visual signal... a sort of sign language for your dog. This is so cool! Dogs are very visual and they frequently react to body movements better than they do to sounds. (You will need to keep this in mind as occasionally it can work against you: to your dog, your voice may be saying one thing while your body language is saying the opposite. In dog communicating, body language trumps verbal language each time. We'll cover this in more detail later.)
