The disaster in Macbeth mainly revolves around one person, Macbeth. Although other outside conflicts influenced Macbeth to start his killing spree, most of the killings are committed by Macbeth. The witches and Lady Macbeth were the ones who helped pushed him along his self-destruction path, but ultimately Macbeth decided to carry out the evil deed of murdering Duncan by himself.
Macbeth’s meeting with the three witches is what first incites the disaster when they tell him that he is to be the Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. Macbeth is surprised by this news and wants to hear more. Macbeth writing to his wife about his encounter with the witches also proved to be a mistake because she became ambitious about Macbeth becoming king and she becoming queen. Macbeth had outside influences involved in the death of Duncan, but the other deaths in the play are caused only by Macbeth.
Macbeth was also responsible for the deaths of Duncan’s guards when he said “O, yet I do repent me of my fury, That I did kill them.” (A2, S3, 100-101) He had no reason for killing them but his rage enabled him to be irrational. When Macbeth became suspicious about Banquo knowing that he had killed Duncan, Macbeth ordered him and his son Fleance to be killed. Banquo was killed and Fleance escaped, which upheld the witch’s prophesy that Banquo’s future would not be happy and that his offspring would be kings. Macbeth showed his true evil when he ordered Banquo and his son to be killed. It showed that he had the ambition to act in a way that would protect his lust for power by retaining the throne of Scotland. When Macduff fled to England, Macbeth ordered that
Macbeth’s ambition is to remain king for as long as possible and he will kill anybody who stops this from happening. Macbeth feels as if he was given a childless rule, and that his legacy will not continue on in fears his rule will be taken away by someone outside his family. Macbeth states, “For Banquo’s issue, I have filed my mind; For them the gracious Duncan have I murder 'd, put rancors in the vessel of my peace only for them, and mine eternal jewel given to the common enemy of man. to make them kings, the seeds of Banquo kings”(Shakspeare 3.1.64-69). Macbeth had committed murder, poisoned his own mind, and destroyed his soul only to end up benefiting Banquo’s heirs. Macbeth, being the paranoid character that he is, feels threatened by this and orders both Banquo and Fleance to be killed. In Act 3, Macbeth says that, “and mine eternal jewel, given to the common enemy of man, to make them kings, the seed of Banquo kings!” (Shakspeare 3.1.67-9). Seeing this choice of act, leads Macbeth’s blind ambition doing all he can, in order to remain where he is, even if he is ‘blind’ to what it going on and fails to truly understand the concept of his choices in killing Banquo, which only further deteriorates his mind because of his thirst for power, causing
The great Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth is a tale about a Scottish Thane, Macbeth, who, seemingly according to a prophecy of witches, becomes Thane of Cawdor, and King. And because Macbeth has gained his throne through deceit and treacherous ways, he loses it. The blame for the downfall of Macbeth lies with Macbeth himself, Lady Macbeth and the witches.
First, I will look at Arendt’s criticism of violence. She believes that violence is not an idle concept. It needs to be justified by ethics and philosophy and often cannot be referred to without regard to
The second malicious decision chosen by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth was to have Banquo and his sons killed. This would cancel out the possibility of Banquo's sons becoming kings. In Act III scene 1, Macbeth states that Banquo and his sons would be murdered by saying, "Banquo, thy soul's flight, if it find heaven, must find it out tonight." (p.91) The consequence of the decision to kill Banquo and his sons started when Macbeth felt more guilt and developed a worried conscience in the form of a vision of Banquo's ghost.
In Macbeth, Macbeth’s tragedy is sealed by his ruthlessness that is a result of envy and anger. Succeeding the kingship, Macbeth does not find contentment in it. He yearns to have a future like Banquo who will be “father to a line of kings. /” (III. i. 65), but he is cursed with a “fruitless crown” (III. i. 66). Being the ruthless man that he was, Macbeth decides that if you cannot have children ascend his thrown then Banquo will curse with the same misfortune, so he has murderers kill both Banquo and his son, Fleance. Though killing Banquo is unforgivable, Macbeth’s ruthlessness was more evident when he also sends the murderers to kill Fleance. Macbeth’s ignorance of Fleance being a helpless child who cannot defend himself makes him more ruthless. Banquo could have defended himself from the attack of the murderers, as he is a great and experienced solider. Trying to have Fleance killed is unfair as he had no way of defending himself. Fortunately for Fleance, he was able to escape his death. The ruthlessness of Macbeth is also demonstrated when he chooses to kill the people who were present in Macduff’s castle, after hearing from Lennox that “Macduff is fled to England. /” (IV. i. 161). Macbeth had good reasoning to kill Macduff who was planning to attack Macbeth’s castle with army from England, but the killings of Macduff’s family were insensible and a result of anger: “The castle of Macduff I will surprise, /
...acbeth, but she had her own reasoning behind her plan that would lead to their fortune. This crazy plan she had wasn’t bound to work from the beginning, and Macbeth knew that. When he agreed to do this deed, he completely left his morals, and became a person who thrived off of power. In the beginning of this plan, all Macbeth wanted was to make his wife as happy as he could, and this led him to be weak, and easily persuaded. After Macbeth realized that this was the way for him to get power, he started to not consult Lady Macbeth with his killings, and just do whatever he thought was going to give him more power. This caused Lady Macbeth to go crazy, and eventually die, because Macbeth was growing apart from her, and she did not know how to cope with it. Overall, Macbeth was the one who led to his own demise because he became the person he never thought he would.
Atticus is a great leader of his family, teaching his children morals and life lessons. He makes them better people by showing them how to deal with the trial and people making fun of them. Atticus teaches Scout how to respect other people. First, Scout learns to respect Atticus, then to respect "Boo" Radley, and finally to respect a whole race of people, negroes. He makes it a common practice to live his life as he would like his children to live theirs, and thus displays the attributes of an honest, respectable, and kind man. Throughout the trial process, Atticus shows Jem and Scout that true courage is standing up for what you believe in and that all human beings, despite their race, deserve respect. "You never really understand a person until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." This quote shows that Atticus wants his children to get along with people, and so other people will respect them for whom they are.
The play Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare. This play tells of betrayal, temptations, ambitions, murder, treason and manipulation. The readers feels sympathetic for MacBeth, as he is stuck in the middle of a situation he can’t get out of. However, sympathy is lost when MacBeth commits evil deeds that he is only responsible for. Macbeth is only persuaded to commit treason, but due to his paranoia he kills many more people. The main focus is Macbeth, being the unfortunate victim, from the 3 evil witches to Lady Macbeth. His downfall is caused by other people around him.
Conformity is defined as the occurrence of people yielding to social pressures as a result of pressure from a group of their peers; when faced by the pressure to conform, people will alter their behaviour and actions to fit the norm demonstrated by their peers (Lilienfield et al., 2012). Conformity is studied so that is can be understood and used in society to facilitate positive outcomes, and help avoid situations where peoples’ predisposition to conform leads to negative consequences (Lilienfield et al., 2012). By understanding conformity and other social processes society as a whole is able to understand themselves better and motivates them to work on improving as a whole (Lilienfield et al., 2012).
Macbeth, one of William Shakespeare’s famous tragedies, is set in Scotland. Returning from battle with his companion Banquo, the nobleman, Macbeth meets with three witches. They predict that Macbeth will initially become the Thane of Cawdor and then king of Scotland. Macbeth privately has ambitions of being king and enjoys the ideas of becoming the head of the country. After the first part of the witches' prophecy comes true, early in the play, he begins to think the subsequent part may also come true. Encouraged after continuous unrest from his wife, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth murders King Duncan, while he is a guest in his castle. Macbeth then seizes the throne of Scotland.
In conclusion, informational social influence plays a large role in how and when people will give into conforming behavior. In both studies, the concept of informational social influence is used to test what the participants do; by adding that factors of putting the participants in an ambiguous situation, a crisis, or in a situation where they feel the need to look to someone with expertise to go forward. Both Williamson et al. (2013) and Milgram (1963) have proved how easy it is to give into influences and exhibit conforming behavior, even up to a possibly dangerous result.
In this play like I mentioned before there were three witches, they take a very important part in the play because they are part of the reason why Macbeth murders the king. They state he will become king soon, “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! All Hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!” (I. iii. 48-50). He does not believe so because he does not yet know that the Thane of Cawdor is already dead and that he has been the thane of Cawdor. He lets that get into his head and lets his wife Lady Macbeth interferes so he can become the king as soon as possible. That’s the mistake he made when he decided to do what his wife said and kill the King. That’s why he is now guilty for first degree murder which is a death that was made being pla...
Conformity is defined as behavior in accordance with socially accepted conventions or standards. This is not a good or bad thing, this just is. It exists as a compliment to earlier humans congregating into larger groups, using agriculture and domestication to create sustenance. Also, conformity is essential for life. We need people to share the same ideas, ideologies and a way of thinking in order to work efficiently and effectively. There many examples that exist like, at work or in your house and even within yourself. Sigmund Freud has explained the phenomena of group psychology in a piece titled, Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego. Using Freud’s theory of conformity I will explain the self, what we call “me”,and its different constituents using The Principles of Psychology by
Katherine: So what is conformity? The Psychological Sciences textbook defines it as “the altering of one’s behaviors and opinions to match those of other people or to match other people’s expectations” (Gazzaniga, 2012).
So far in the play we can see that Lady Macbeth (Macbeth’s wife) is controlling and a bit mad. Macbeth is planning to kill King Duncan but keeps being indecisive weather to or not. We no that Macbeth needs a lot of persuading by lady Macbeth to kill king Duncan but the three witches also took a part in it because if it was not for them he would have never told lady Macbeth about it. Lady Macbeth called Macbeth a coward which was an insult because Macbeth was a brave warrior, and also told him that he was too full of the mi...
