Although many tend to think going to college and getting a degree is the american dream, that varies, and in most circumstances that isn’t the truth at all. As college prices have soared over the past few decades, and student debt becoming evermore of a factor in the decision of going to college has been increasingly difficult. In Linda Lee’s case, her son was one who was smart but never really applied himself and then when it came time to go to college he was ill-prepared and had no clue about what to do with himself; however, with how “America is obsessed with college” (Lee 3) it isn’t really his fault that he wasn’t prepared but more of a lack on the educational systems part. During high school, you are pushed to take what classes best …show more content…
Although most will be pushed to go to college some will choose to go out into the workforce immediately and that cannot be looked down upon because that is their decision and that is what they want to do, but with that in mind they must always consider college because in a lifetime it will more than likely be the wiser decision. One who takes the risk and tries to go to college might find out they want to be a biology teacher and not an astrophysicist and that is all due to college and all the experiences that it can bring along that have absolutely nothing to do with education but of broadening horizons and making one see different points of view. That is where the true value of college lies, not with the education and degree, but with the experiences, meeting new people, learning new ideals and cultures, and the ultimate tool you gain is just finding out who you are as a person. During college you learn what you like and don’t like, what makes you happy and doesn’t, you find yourself during college and that cannot simply be overlooked because of a price tag. That is why I believe everyone should consider college and overlook the price tag all to find themselves and further them along as a human being and a
There is a thin line of people who should and should not attend college. That is a huge decision that could either be the best decision they have ever made or it could be a costly mistake causing thousands of dollars of debt to pile up. There are reasons such as costly tuitions, unnecessary fees, no guarantee of a career, piling of debt, and questionable educational quality, that lead me to believe that college is not worth the money people pay for it.
It is the American dream to get out of high school and to start working towards your degree, right? Perusing a degree in the United States is not as dream like for some students. Many factors such as the learning environment, where you come from, and the knowledge and will power can shape how the higher education experience can go. While not all of these factors necessarily point to a rough or tough college experience, but also show that we as a nation could help our students be more educated and prepared to pursue and finish a degree. All students should be given equal opportunity and tools to become a successful member of society.
The definition of the American Dream fluctuates from person to person, but can ultimately lead to a broad basis: With hard work and dedication, one can achieve success. And with success, comes happiness. We strive for happiness. In this journey, most come to understand that a college education is the key to becoming knowledgeable, and knowledge is important in becoming successful. Therefore, going to college can lead to success, right? Not a difficult concept to grasp. With the staggering rates of tuition bills and the dwindle of job availability, it would seem the path to success narrows each day. Those with money to cover these costs aren't usually too worried about their debts, seeing as they could squash them like ants. In America, our education is highly valued, but the value of education is incredibly too high. Confucius was not around for colleges and technical institutions, so the subject matter of his teachings did not include di...
When looking at attending class from the perspective of a college student it should hopefully be easy to understand why you should attend. For most students the answer would consist of something along the lines of ‘to better educate myself’ or ‘so I can get a better paying job’, both of which seem plausible. However, those from past generations and those with different demographics might look at this question much differently, due to a college education not always being a necessity to become successful in life. Therefore older generations may have looked at skipping class in a different light than a 20 year-old would today. With much higher stakes to do well in both primary and higher education courses causes cutting class to carry great risk
Since I grew up in a household with two parents who are college graduates, and even two grandparents who had graduated from college, the idea of attending college was never seen as a unique opportunity, but rather as a necessary part of my future. I’m not going to complain about growing up with parents who valued the pursuit of knowledge, but it certainly never exposed me to the mindset that maybe college is not the best option for everyone after high school. Today, there is a huge debate over if the price of college is really worth it in the end, with the high cost of tuition and the number of people who just aren’t prepared for the demands that college has to offer. And on the other side, some say that college is a necessity not just in one’s
Many Americans today tend to believe that a college education is valuable financially, yet some others strongly oppose this, since they look at the college education as being both time and money consuming. A person who successfully completes a college education may obtain one or all of the following; an associate’s degree after two years, a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or a PhD. The institutions that provide the college education can be public or private. Whereas a college education might be seen as being very expensive, it actually increases people’s chances of getting higher paying jobs, instills knowledge into them, and raises their enjoyment levels.
Three years ago my life drastically changed when my husband of 19 years decided he wanted a divorce. I had always been a wife and a mother and only worked part time through the majority of my marriage. Having married at 19, I never thought too much about going to college. I always thought I wanted to be a stay at home mom and never thought too much about what my life would be like once the children grew into adulthood. Now, at 41 years old, I realize how horrible a decision I made by not getting my college education sooner. Trying to go back to school while working full-time and raising two kids on my own is not fun. It’s a struggle to find that right balance of being a good student but also being a good mom. I want to make my kids proud
There are those students that don’t want to study or do the work and they are just in college for the parties and to have fun and college is not for them. But for the mast majority that are actually contemplating furthering their education I say go for it and that you won 't regret it. I know many students look at the debt that they will incur while they are in school, but when you look at the rewards that come from receiving a college education they outweigh the risk. You will more than likely make a lot more money with an education than if you just have a high school diploma, as long as you do your research and find a career that you are likely to obtain a career, once your degree is completed. The unemployment rate is much lower for those that have a degree of some
We all have to go to school as it is mandatory by law until we graduate from twelfth grade. However, after high school the options seem endless, and the choices are overwhelming. Young graduates can go to a community college to take advantage of the free tuition for two years and then move to a university after that. They also may forge ahead and go straight to a university to begin to pursue their future career. They may choose to go straight into the workforce. My father took this path, and he has been successful and supports our family well. There are many success stories of people who have chosen from these different paths indicating that there is really not a wrong choice. Some people think that going to college isn’t worth the
For the past few months I have been attending college as a first year, but recently I have started to ask myself is college really worth it? Or is there a better alternative other than going on the traditional path to college? Furthermore if there are alternative path instead of attending college, why aren’t we taking them? In many situations we do have the option of acquiring special licenses and certifications that can get us the careers we desire, but without the need to attend college, but if we can do things like getting licenses and certificates then why do most of us choose to go to college knowing that there is a better option? Even more, a better option that will probably not cost you as much in the long run. Yet millions upon millions of students make the choice of going to college every year, for this I ask why?
A challenge that all seniors face at the end of their high school career is the decision that will shape the rest of their future. Will it be Harvard, Ivy Tech, or a job at the nearest fast food joint? Of course, there is nothing wrong with not going to college, but for the people of society who plan to marry and have at least three children, it is almost essential. After making this decision, the seniors who choose to attend college must then decide which one. Campus size, housing, nearby activities, and available degrees and study programs are all important traits to consider when searching for the perfect college.
College tuition bills have always been a big controversy topic for years due to the fact that costs are constantly rising. Many individuals can not afford to pay between 20-60 thousand dollars per year to attend college and get a degree, so now people are leaning toward not going to college period. In the article, "Is College Worth the Cost. Many Recent Graduates Don't Think So," Jeffrey J. Selingo emphasizes good points that many college graduates don't think that getting a college degree is worth the money and stress; however, Selingo does not explain the weight behind a college degree and what it can do for one's future.
Attending college is worth it. Students who get a college education and graduate have many more life changing opportunities than those who don 't; the debates of studying after high school has been ongoing for many years but statistics have proven that majority to all students who go to college achieve more life goals than the average high school graduate. They get more work benefits, life skills, higher paying salaries, etc. There is a downside to everything in life such as debt is to college education. However, the price students pay is so small compared to what the benefits they receive after graduating from college.
College education goes about the way to an effective future for people who are not kidding with it. Currently, a college education has turned in the base necessity in securing a job in different companies and although some people might think college is not worth the debt, in a long run it actually is.
Individuals in my generation that decide to go away for college may graduate with a degree but they also graduate with debt and have a hard time finding work in their area of study. College graduates are young and many may not have much experience in their field. It is a bittersweet option to go to college and further your education, I am all for it, but I am not for getting yourself in tons of debt, that will cause you to live your whole life paying off student loans and such. Which is one of the reasons why I chose to stay at home and go to community college, I’m saving money while still getting a great education. In earlier generations, people may not have felt that college was important because they needed a job to support themselves and their families. That is understandable because in the early years becoming an adult meant turning of age, 18, getting a job, moving out and starting your own family, but now turning 18 doesn’t mean you automatically are an adult and can move out and start your own life, I have friends that went to college, have a job but still are not able to move out on their own even in their
