How non-statutory variables in politics cause derailment in public policy. There are a couple of political variables that are non-statutory that can cause a shift in the objectives of the public policy. Statutory policies are those that are not required by the law but are considered the common law. Media attention to the problem is one of them. A lot of times you might find that the media is involved in public policy issues. Since media sole purpose is to collect information and broadcast to the public, incorrect information may be collected which may in a way completely change the meaning to a public policy causing a derailment. This is whereby the public’s opinion about a public policy is inquired or considered. In the case that the public policy was sound and valid, a rejection by the public might cause it to appear differently. Some changes might be done to achieve public support but in the real sense, this might completely alter the intended purpose of the public policy. Another non-statutory variable causing a derailment is the commitment of the officials involved in the implementation of a public policy (Nilsen, P. (2015).. In the case that a public policy is valid and sound, non commitment from the officials might completely change this. The people involved have to be self-driven towards ensuring correct implementation of a public policy (Nilsen, P. (2015). The leadership skills are also considered in this case. This means the officials have to possess quality leadership skills for the public policy implementation to go as planned. A public policy might be affected in the case that there is no support from the supreme authority or the group in charge. Sovereign support is not a must consideration during the implementation of a public policy but is often considered. A country might alter their public policies in order to please or gain support from the sovereign countries. The support might come in terms of donation or resource
