The Oakville-Milton Humane Society is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to providing shelter for stray, abandon, and injured animals. Located in the region of Halton, the Oakville-Milton Humane Society has become the most recognized and affective humane society within the region. It was founded in 1936 and has since grown and developed a reliable relationship with members of the community. The shelter is funded through donations and sponsorships from members and corporations within the community. The Oakville-Milton Humane Society has a board of directors, which has 13 members, and close to 50 field volunteers. Using the course ideas of textual analysis and textual research approach, this research paper intends to reveal an in-depth viewpoint, the core values and the culture of the Oakville-Milton Humane society. Through rigorous and insightful textual analysis, I only managed to come across a few credible sources providing information on the Oakville-Milton Humane Society. Given the size and relevance of the shelter, credible information can really only be found from sources close to the humane society. For example, the leading resource was their own website, where they display annual reports, adoption reports, their mission statement, funding opportunities and also continually update the community on upcoming events that they will be hosting. The limited resources show that the Oakville-Milton Humane Society focuses on creating a sizeable impact in the region of Halton, as even though there are limited resources, the credible and effective resources are based out of the community the shelter attempts to support. This shows that the culture of the Oakville-Milton Humane Society is community focused. Th... ... middle of paper ... ...5 Feb. 2014. . • Oakville & Milton Humane Society - Adopt a Dog. The nonprofit sector in America is a reflection some of the foundational values that brought our nation into existence. Fundamentals, such as the idea that people can govern themselves and the belief that people should have the opportunity to make a difference by joining a like-minded group, have made America and its nonprofit sector what it is today. The American "civil society" is one that has been produced through generations of experiments with government policy, nonprofit organizations, private partnerships, and individuals who have asserted ideas and values. The future of the nonprofit sector will continue to be experimental in many ways. However, the increase of professional studies in nonprofit management and the greater expectation of its role in society is causing executives to look to more scientific methods of management.

Faye is fighting to re-home animals that have been abandoned and abused. Since 2012 she has re-homed more than 60 dogs, and about 20 kittens. Faye says, “I would do anything no matter what to save one animal.” It’s as if her whole entire life revolves around saving animals. Faye thinks just by adopting an animal you can help animal abandonment. Also, Faye has her own book on why animal abandonment isn’t good. Although Faye thinks her job is stressful, she thinks it’s easy because she enjoys doing her job and helping animals find a home.
The humane society is a nonprofit organization, which is a corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive. The humane society is also a 501c, a nonprofit American tax-exempt organization. It was founded in 1954 by Fred Myers (1904-1963), its first name was the National Humane Society, later named The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Their first mission was to decrease suffering of livestock during slaughter. The Humane Slaughter Act passed in 1958, this would change the lives of millions of animals around America. The Humane Society began investigating animal experimentation around the 1950s to gather evidence on animal neglect or suffering. Myers said,” every humane society should be actively concerned about the treatment accorded to such a vast number of animals.” In 1961 HSUS investigated dog dealers in the U.S. to gain support for a law to be passed that would prevent cruelty to animals in laboratories. The investigation lasted 5 years, then in February 1966 life magazine published an essay about dog dealers and thousands of Americans wrote to their congressional representatives and demanded action to protect animals and stop pet theft. Later that year the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 was passed, the second major federal humane law passed since world war II. Other goals they had during this time were: reduce homeless dogs and cats, reform inhumane euthanasia practices, redact abuses by pet stores and pet breeding trades, and help wildlife and marine life. The head of the humane society organization are the board of directors, which has about 15 members who are all volunteers. Then there is the executive board ...
Nationwide, approximately 50 percent of all children will be bitten by a dog before they reach the age of twelve (DeIorio, “Have a Dog-Bite-Free Summer”). In Marion County, Florida, aggressive and dangerous breads of dogs are a “serious issue” for the community according to Marion County Commissioner Jim Payton (Thompson, “County drops '1 free kill'”). Responsible dog owners seem to be unaware of the problem but area residents who have been victims of these attacks have turned to the Marion County Board of Commissioners for help. The local County Commissioners have been wrestling with this issue since October of 2009 when a widow from Ocklawaha, Patricia McBee, had three of her dogs euthanized after they allegedly killed her neighbor’s cat (Thompson, “County drops ‘1 free kill’”). The need for change moved even faster after a 3-year-old little girl was attacked and killed by a dog that was chained to a tree outside her house in Citra (Lee, “Girl, 3, mauled”).

Many of you have been to the pet store in your local malls, and strolled around while looking at the different breeds of puppies in the small cages. Some may be sleeping, some may be biting the other puppy they’re living with and others may be in the corner frightened. Everyone has seen the depressing commercial, showing pictures of sad looking animals, asking for donations, with the Sarah McLachlan song playing in the background. Many of those puppies come from puppy mills. Defined by ASPCA, which stands for The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a puppy mill is a large-scale commercial dog breeding operation that places profit over the well being of its dogs—who are often severely neglected—and acts without regard to responsible breeding practices. We need to stop buying puppies from commercial pet stores and online puppy scams, and we need to start adopting them from responsible breeders, rescue organizations, and shelters or pounds. Caroline Earle White, a leader in preventing the cruelty to animals, was a huge part in opening the first animal shelter, and was a big believer in treating animals well. (Beers 9) When you adopt from shelters or rescue organizations, you are saving a puppy from a life full of malnourishment, lack of love, and exposure to numerous diseases, giving it a home and no longer fueling the puppy mill industry.
Founded in 1866, by: Henry Bergh, the ASPCA is the first humane society in America, and one of the largest in the world. Henry's philosophy is that all animals deserve respect by all humans, and must be protected by law (Henry Bergh). In the early years dogs were used to pull carts and work treadmills simply because men couldn't afford horses, but thanks to Henry's diligent efforts, he helped get a law passed prohibiting dogs to work in such environments. The first animal hospital opened in 1912, starting the course for others to follow. Since the ASPCA is privately funded, and a not for profit organization, their supporters reach well over 2 million people. That is very impressive! There are three key factors that keep the ASPCA thriving. They are: the protection for pet parents and pets,
For my persuasive paper I will research the humane society. Humane Society is a charity that cares for abandoned and abused animals. The charity takes care of animals that local shelters are unable to care due lack of resources. This charity also tries to stop animal abuse by making petitions to stop puppy mills, bring attention to wild trade and report pit bull fighting. I have chosen this charity because I had previous experience with this organization. This charity help me save a puppy that I found on the streets last year. Due to the integrity and dedication that this organization had at that one time, it persuades me to pick this charity to be the focus in my paper.
Ideally, pet supply would be equal to the demand for wanted pets. There may never be enough caring homes for all the pets as is evident by the fact that only about 25 percent of the pets in shelters are ever adopted. F...

Throughout my nearly four years of volunteering with Suncoast Animal League, I have felt a wide range of experiences and emotions towards the non-profit. My first day was absolutely terrifying. I arrived at the shelter with the idea that it was the typical shelter shown on television, a considerable sized building with huge kennels and white walls. Instead, before me stood a house, about the size of my own, with a few cars parked outside. Upon entering it became even more apparent that the building was once inhabited by a typical family; the kitchen was off to the side and both the medical room and back quarantine rooms felt like modified bedrooms. Nevertheless, the workers were friendly and I began my training.
According to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty), the first humane organization, founded in 1866, in the Western Hemisphere that works to rescue animals from abuse and pass humane laws, the definition of animal cruelty is “acts of violence or neglect perpetrated against animals.” This definition is presented in a paper written by Learning To Give, an organization that teaches children to give back, take voluntary citizen action, and engage civilly and presents it through a philanthropist approach. Animal cruelty is an atrocious act that needs to be understood and not undermined. It is easy to push something to the back of our minds and put ourselves in denial when the issue is not right in front of our faces. Many of us know animal cruelty exists, but how many of us know how prevalent it is? Acknowledgement of the problem is the only way we can begin to solve it.
Every year, the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) takes in close to 50,000 reports of animal mistreatment in Australia and about 150,000 in England and in Wales (RSPCA, 2013). However, these figures do not include the cases when mistreatment is not reported which, according to the RSPCA, happens almost as often as the ones recorded (RSPCA, 2013). Maltreatment occurs when an animal is tormented or harmed, imprisoned or transported from one place to another in a manner that risks their well-being and health. Killing them in a non-humane way, not providing them with the correct food, not taking care of them or the illness and injuries they may have, and not providing them with proper shelter or adequate living circumstances are also forms of cruelty. In 2013 the RSPCA investigated 4,000 more cases in Australia than in the previous year; statistics also show that in the United Kingdom, on average, every thirty seconds someone dials the Organization’s 24-hour cruelty line seeking for help (RSPCA, 2013). This indicates that animal mistreatment is a growing issue that has effects not only on the victims, but also on the perpetrator, the people involved in rescuing and saving the animals’ life, and every other individual that gets touched by their stories. Thus, considering that abusing animals is against our moral and ethical obligation of protecting our planet and the forms of life in it, including animal life, it is an issue that is happening considerably often. However, thankfully for the animals, there are also organizations and laws opposing and fighting against animal cruelty to save the victims and to put an end to it. Global organizations such as the RSPCA, ALDF, PETA, WSPA, among other...
The Charity Organization Society was based in the scientific movement of organizations. Workers believed that charity work needed more definition and organization and that charity should be focused more on individual need rather than as a whole population. Focusing on individual need was intended to improve relief operations while making resources more efficient. They also intended to eliminate public outdoor relief. With the promotion of more organization and efficiency the new Charity Organization Societies were born. Trattner states that these new requirements for organization and efficiency spread so “rapidly that within 6 years 25 cities had such organizations and by the turn of the century there were some 138 of them in existence” (Trattner, 1999).
