When you think about 90’s grunge several bands come to mind, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, and Bush. One of the greatest and still talked about today is Nirvana! Nirvana brought an intense passionate sound that listeners weren’t accustomed to. You felt their music, and whether you liked them or not they were everywhere. Nirvana became more of a figurehead for grunge music and every record label was looking for the next “Nirvana.” Kurt Cobain, Nirvana’s leader, grew up in Aberdeen, Washington along with Krist Novoselic, bass guitarist and co-leader. They met through a mutual friend Buzz Osborne of the Melvins, a local Aberdeen band. He started dating Courtney Love, front lady of the band Hole. They were married February 24, 1992. Cobain and Love had a tumultuous relationship, mostly due to the drug use of heroin. Love became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl, Frances Bean, on August 18, 1992. Cobain and Love named her after Frances Farmer, a 1940’s actress, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. When Frances was born child services in Los Angeles challenged Love’s and Cobain’s fitness to be parents. The pair ultimately won custody of the baby. Amid all the chaos, Nirvana was able to release Incesticide, a compilation of early music. It went gold, but DCG was really pushing for a new album. Nirvana had many memorable appearances during this time. Right after Frances Bean was born they performed for the MTV music awards. They also had several appearances on Saturday Night Live. They headlined at the Reading Festival in England. The touring and stress seemed to be taking its toll on the front man Cobain. His drug use and very serious stomach ailment left the singer and guitarist weak and a lot of times hostile.
