“Reading is freedom,” the story Night john shows how reading is a form of freedom. Being able to read and understand things without someone having to do it for you is a type of independence, and independence is freedom. Reading and writing is also a gift or freedom that can never be taken away. Now I believe the movie version of this story better explains its main idea better than the book ever did. With the added various scenes, characters, and places that the book could never fit in six chapters.
For one thing the adding of new character had made the book more complex and had shown the main idea through each of these characters. Waller’s family like his two sons, and his brother play large roles in the story. The slaves play even larger roles in the story and connect to the idea more. Like Outlaw, Outlaw’s Wife, and Old man. There is a few other characters like the Doctor who plays a major role as well in the movie. Outlaw is a slave that does manage to escape with his wife with guess, literally with the power of writing. The old man is a slave who also knows how to read and write and was dismembered for it. Showing how even though the freedom of reading comes at a price. The Doctor also plays an important position with Waller’s wife and Sarney including the affair, figuring out first that Sarney can read, letting Sarney send letters giving her even more opportunities to read, and finally taking accountability for why Sarney can read. He also is the one the movie saves John fro...

Because out all of those grim scenes I can definitely get the conclusion “Oh, the main idea must be that reading is freedom.” There are far more scenes in the movie that the book didn’t have showing how reading is freedom and it can’t be taken away.
As you can all see the movie for once is actually better than the book in showing the
Main purpose and idea of the story. The idea that reading is freedom that can never be taken away from you. The book just could not have put all of these exclusive scenes and characters that brought out the purpose of the story within six measly chapters. Overall, the movie better explained the purpose of story that took place in a time when “It’s against the law for a Negro slave to read!”
