Nicotine is an infamous chemical substance that is often found in tobacco. Tobacco contains several hundred chemical compounds and has been known to cause many dangerous health issues, primarily to the respiratory system, such as coughing, asthma, and in many cases, lung cancer. However, it is not nicotine itself that causes these health issues, but rather, it is other chemicals, mainly tar, that lead to damage in the respiratory system. That is not to say that nicotine is harmless. On the contrary, nicotine is a stimulant and it is the major cause of why tobacco is so addicting (Benowitz, 2008). An advocate for this claim, could argue that nicotine is more dangerous than tobacco itself due to the addiction that it can cause. This point of …show more content…
Many could argue that nicotine is solely responsible for the addiction found in using tobacco and not the health damage. Still, an addiction by itself is an extremely bad habit and it is not something that one should overlooked. It is common for individuals to pick up a bad habit on accident, and once they do, it will be very difficult to let go of the habit. In the case of nicotine and tobacco, individuals are knowingly picking up an addiction that they do not know if they could stop. In other words, nicotine is like an addicted bad habit that is extremely hard to stop once it started. Furthermore, this habit can and will lead to an expensive and destructive lifestyle. Smoking is terrible, or science has yet to discover any medical advantages connected with it. You'd have a hard time discovering somebody that would contend against this thought. While most normal individuals comprehend this idea, there is Surgeon General the United States, who has a message stamped on each tobacco item sold in the country. On the off chance that stopping is the point then we as a general public need to go for the proverbial jugular, and that is smoking tobacco is fatal. Although there have been some experiment that disprove nicotines adverse effects, most studies point to nicotine as a very toxic agent. Nicotine is not essential to tobacco products. It is a naturally occurring slightly basic alkaloid with a pyridine and a pyrrolidine ring. It is estimated that the average smoker inhales with each puff, a dose of nicotine equivalent to .1mg nicotine given intravenously. Nicotines pKa is 9. Its half-life is two hours. Nicotine is converted to its metabolites by the P450 enzyme system and by aldehyde oxidases. Nicotine and its metabolites, such as cotinine, Nnitrosomornicotinine (NNN), and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)1-butanone (NNK) are toxic to humans. As is shown in P4, many people in the United States smoke. The average mg of nicotine per cigarette has declined in the United States in the1980...

Living in a world where many prefer to believe what is shown to them, rather than doing some of their own research, can lead to consequences. (Figure 1) Some people believe electronic cigarettes are a safer and healthier alternative to the actual cigarette because of how they are advertised. “Because they [e-cigs] deliver nicotine without burning tobacco, e-cigarettes are purported to be safer and less toxic than conventional cigarettes. Despite these claims, there’s still no real data on the effects of e-cigarettes (positive or negative), yet marketing materials still bill them as a healthy choice” (Worthington emphasis mine). Drug advertisements normally show the beneficial side of
