Niccolo Machiavelli is well known for his quote, “It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both.” Leaders play a key role in influencing the lives of a nation by making important decisions that could affect one 's daily routine. Whether they led in fear or love, majority of the citizens appreciated what they did because they knew it would benefit them in the future. Mother Teresa, Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin emit these qualities, and are able to gain the trust of their constituents. Machiavelli’s quote is valid because specific leaders have been able to lead a country successfully through fear. Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Yugoslavia, Mother Teresa felt a calling to christ and became a nun in 1928. By 1929, she began teaching geography at St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta, India, but soon abandoned her position to care for the needy living in the slums (Teresa). Teresa was able to aid victims who contracted leprosy through her Missionaries of Charity program.”The goal of the Missionaries of charity, according to Mother Teresa, was to provide care for the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, and those affected by the skin disease leprosy” (Mother). Hitler was very dedicated to his country by volunteering in World War I. Hurt by the United States victory in the war, Adolf Hitler became determined to play a key role in the restoration of Germany (Adolf). Hitler originally created the Nazi Party in 1920, but it ultimately failed and he was sent to jail. After his release, Adolf was able to rejuvenate the Nazi Party and outmaneuver potential rivals for leadership (Adolf). Once he gained complete power over Germany, he restricted the right of many Jews and sent them to concentration camps.
