Newspeak
Newspeak vaporized the minds of the citizen of Ocenia, who were members of The Party. Imagine being in an environment in which you were not able to think. Imagine being treated like a robot. Imagine having no feelings like a robot, doing only what you are ordered to do, nothing for yourself. Welcome to Oceania, the utopian society of 1984 by George Orwell. In Oceania executive level members of The Party used Newspeak to gain control of the minds of lower level – common – party members. To gain control of the minds, first The Party diminished thought. For example on Page 45, Winston’s friend Syme says, “We’re destroying words – scores of them, hundreds of them, every day. We’re cutting the language down to the bone. The Eleventh Edition won’t contain a single word that will be obsolete before the year 2050.” Unlike other languages Newspeak was designed to diminish thought, rather than help expression. Instead of gaining words, day-by-day Newspeak would lose them. If there is no word for the concept of freedom, how can a person in the party think about freedom? By limiting the language, the party members are limited in their thought. Fewer words make expression difficult. If there is little or no expression of any type the mind is more easily controlled. In this book everyone knew what was going on, but nobody wanted to say anything. They knew what was going on but did nothing to prevent it. The reader on the other hand doesn’t know what is happening and only learning piece by piece each chapter. Not knowing what’s going on is tortuous for the reader but makes them want more, so they keep reading.
Unlike our government in the United States, we actually have freedom of speech, press and petition unlike in 1984 where you could be killed for speaking and acting what is not in the regulations and could be sent to room 101 and sent to the labor camps where bad things happen to you. “We’re getting the language into its final shape- the shape it’s going to have when nobody speaks anything else. When we’ve finished with it, people like you will have to learn it all over again. You think, I dare say, that our chief job is inventing new words. But not a bit of it! We’re cutting the language down to the bone. The Eleventh Edition won’t contain the language down to the bone. The Eleventh Edition won’t contain a single word that will become obsolete before the year 2050” (51). The quote explains the kind of power that Big Brother can expose to the citizens of Oceania and goes to show that changing the language and not being able to speak in a certain way takes away the number one right people have and that is to free speech. Just like the United States does and I am pretty sure the rest of the world does, there should be a clear line between too much government control over to little government control. When the government starts having too much control is when they start going above and beyond the citizen’s health and safety. A quote from 1984 states that “war is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” Which basically explains that the only way to have peace is to start a war, freedom is slavery because in 1984 being your own person and being free was a crime so was having your own opinion because of all the propaganda they tried forcing down everyone’s threats the party expects you to act and think in a certain way. The Party and its leader Big Brother play the role of authority in 1984. The Party is always watching the citizens of the Republic of Oceania. This is exemplified in the fact that the government has telescreens through which they can watch you wherever you are set up almost everywhere. Even in the countryside where there are no telescreens, the Party can monitor its citizens through hidden microphones disguised as flowers. The Thought Police are capable of spying on your thoughts at anytime, and can arrest or even kill you on a whim. Not only does the Thought Police find and hunt down felons, but it also scares others into being good citizens. The Party strives to eliminate more and more words from people’s vocabularies. Thus, the Party can destroy any possibilities of revolutions and conspiracies against itself. Its ultimate goal is to reduce the language to only one word, eliminating thought of any kind. The Party makes people believe that it is good and right in its actions through the Ministry of Truth and through the slogans printed on the Ministry of Truth:...
“Today there were fear, hatred, and pain, but no dignity of emotion, or deep or complex sorrows.” (Orwell 30) The Party has stripped the society of almost all emotion that they can’t have deep or complex emotions. Their people are told what to feel and if they think or feel deeper, it is thoughtcrime. Thoughtcrime is a serious offense in this society. “Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow down the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.” (Orwell 52) Even their language is used to destruct thought. Every year it becomes more and more impossible to have deep feelings or thoughts because their language gets smaller and smaller. The whole goal of Newspeak is to narrow down their words to one single word. Doing this will completely diminish thought. They won’t have words to express what they’re thinking or feeling. Eventually the whole society will be paroles, retards. “But you could not have pure love or pure lust nowadays. No emotion was pure, because everything was mixed up with fear and hatred. Their embrace had been a battle, the climax a victory. It was a blow struck against the Party. It was a political act.” (Orwell 126) Even when they have personal feelings it is still directed towards the Party. No emotion is fully towards one
1984 tells the story of Winston Smith who lives in Oceania, a dystopian nation ruled by a strictly totalitarian government know only as ‘The Party’. The Party controls everything in Oceania, even people's history and language. It uses telescreens which are everywhere-you can’t speak, breathe or sneeze without the government knowing about it. The Party even enforces a new language to prevent political rebellion by eliminating all words related to it. Even thinking rebellious thoughts, known as thoughtcrime, is illegal: "Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime is death."

This is not newspeak exactly as Orwell portrayed it (a open attempt at centralized modification of language), but more in the form of what Orwell warned about in his essay Language and Politics. The subtle debasing of words has allowed the powerful in democratic nations to successfully install a system which is blatantly counter-democratic in its behavior and yet is masked by twisted language.
Winston is confronted with struggle throughout the entirety of George Orwell`s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Living within a totalitarian regime subsequently causes Winston to seek approaches for dealing with such abundant oppression; he finds liberation through self-awareness, understanding and ultimately rebellion. First, Winston realizes that “if you want to keep a secret you must also hide it from yourself”, alluding to the notion of thoughtcrime (162). This recognition exemplifies the complete cognizance that Winston has regarding the oppressive society displayed throughout the novel. Next, Syme states “It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words”, alluding to the idea of Newspeak (28). This statement directly correlates to Winston speaking with other party members to gain knowledge about how others feels about policies deployed by the government. This information-seeking also connects with Winston`s rebellion, as he actively searched for others to join his uprising, which is shown when Winston tells O’Brien “We want to join [The Brotherhood]” (171). Winston’s attempt to join a rebellious organization exhibits his evident desire to release his suppressed emotions. Winston devises a very methodical approach to deal with the problematic society he resides in.
The novel, 1984, by George Orwell, depicts a dystopian society where no freedom exists; not even the freedom of thought. The scene takes place in Oceania, a society in which the ruling power called “the Party” strictly controls everything people do: from the way they speak, to how they move, to their very own thoughts. Despite the warnings of Orwell through both his essay and dystopian novel, bad English is still used today, and could be argued to affect more English than it did during Orwell’s life. The consequences are also just as he predicted, those who control the language are able to wield control over the thoughts of others. The usage of poor quality English by media has he effect of making the recipients of news more detached from events and as a consequence, more self-focused. The clumsiness and foolishness imposed by bad English ultimately degrading thought, politics, culture, and society is what Orwell had foretold. This is the English tragedy that is disregarded, modern thoughts of “English” are not of language but of the English Queen.

The citizens are brainwashed into thinking that everything the government does is for the better of the citizens and society as a whole. Big Brother said that the chocolate rations went up even though they didn’t change. Also, they said that they wanted to make the English language shorter to help save time and make it easier to speak. The real reason is to make the citizens less educated so they cannot figure out what the party is really up to. For example, while Syme is talking to Winston he says, “’you think, I dare say, that our chief job is inventing new words. But not a bit of it! We’re destroying words-scores of them, hundreds of them, every day. We’re cutting the language down to the bone’” (Orwell 51). Orwell explains, “The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of Ingsoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible . . . literally unthinkable,” (246).
