New Technologies and Implications of Learning

New technologies allow more flexibility, an alternative when students miss class, online review of content (Gomis-Porqueras, P. et.al, 2011). In addition, new technologies can improve students’ learning depending on how the instructor uses the technology and the age of the students. An article written by Susan O’Hara and Robert Pritchard states students’ scores improve with technology. One example of improvement in scores is the Reporter Project where sixth grade students showed significant improvement in specific skills such as identifying main idea, supporting details and cause of effect relationship (O’Hara & Pritchard, 20…). The article also discussed other studies that show improvement in literacy development when using a variety of technology like the hypermedia, hypertext, images, videos, and audio clips. A list of other studies also show imp0rovement in students gains in the area of language development. According to the paper Impact of Class Lecture Webcasting on Attendance and Leaning by Tomoko Traphagan, John V. Kucsera, and Kyoko Kishi, a discussion of several studies is presented. It indicates students’ attendance decreased when webcasting lectures were available but students’ overall performance did not show a significant difference from those who did not have webcasting available. These are college level students (Traphagan, T. et.al, 2009). Students use the webcast to review materials, particularly before exams and if they missed a day of lecture. The final results show there is no significant difference in students’ performance with or without webcasting, and the attendance decreased slightly for those with webcasting versus those students without webcasting (Traphagan, T. et. al., 2009).

Multimedia for young children seem to help them improve in literacy development, language acquisition and mathematics, among some others. Nevertheless, digital tools still require skillful teaching.
