Why is there such a need for a new fire station in the City of Excelsior Springs and where would be the best location for the new station or stations? These are 2 very important and essential questions in determining how efficient the Excelsior Springs Fire Department currently is compared to how efficient it has the potential to be. In determining the answers to these vital questions, there was an abundance of research done in lots of different areas. The fire department was looked at, analyzed, and compared to similar departments nearby. The city was researched to find the current risks, and also the future risks and demands of the city. Coverage and response standards were looked into. Also, current response times were analyzed. After finding and analyzing all the information and data, it will be determined whether or not there should be additional fire stations in the City of Excelsior Springs and where they should be located.
The Excelsior Springs Fire Department is a municipal fire department that is organized to provide fire and emergency medical services for the preservation of life and property to the city of Excelsior Springs and also parts of the surrounding areas outside of the city limits. The duties of the fire department include fire suppression, advanced life support ambulances, hazardous materials mitigation, rescue, fire safety inspections, and public safety education among others. There are 41 total employees. There is the chief, one deputy chief, one administrative assistant, 3 assistant chiefs, 3 captains, 12 firefighter emt basics or firefighter paramedics, and 20 paid volunteers/ volunteers. The department consists of 3 pumpers, 1 quint, 3 ambulances, 2 brush trucks, and 2 chief vehicles.

At 2215 hrs, on November 28, 1942, Fire Alarm Headquarters from Box 1514, situated at Stuart and Carver streets, received an alarm. When the responding apparatus arrived they found a small car fire at the corner of Stuart Street and Broadway. After the fire was extinguished the firefighters were about to return to quarters when their attention was called to smoke emanating from the Cocoanut Grove Nightclub a few doors away. Upon their arrival at the entrance of the Broadway lounge on Broadway they encountered numerous people leaving the premises admidst the cries of “fire”. The chief in charge immediately ordered that a third alarm be sounded from Alarm Box 1521 which the alarm was received by fire alarm headquarters at 2223 hrs. A civilian sent an alarm that was received at 2220 by fire alarm headquarters. As soon as the chief in charge realized that the immediate problem was one of rescue he ordered that a fourth alarm (received at 2224) and a fifth alarm (received at 1102) be sent. The apparatus responding was comprised of 25 engine companies, 5 ladder companies, 1 water tower company, 1 rescue company and various other apparatus. 18 hose steams for cooling purposes and three ladders were utilized (located at Piedmont, Broadway, and Shawmut for venting operations).

In emergencies, they are expected to prevent and extinguish fires, as well as give first aid to anyone who’s injured. The duties also include rescuing people from buildings or cars, breaking down doors and carrying heavy fire hoses up ladders or stairs. A lot of training is needed to carry out these duties, because volunteers also have to wear heavy protective clothing. This clothing is needed due to the hot, dangerous and smoky environments they will be in. There are non-emergency duties as well, like maintaining the fire engines and facilities at the firehouse.

Fire investigators are a big deal in our world and are highly overlooked by people. Fire investigators are responsible for finding out how a fire is started in an area and what action was the cause of the fire, and how it started can be very complicated. Fire investigators usually start off with being a firefighter or officer and have to go through training. I also know that in order to be a good investigator you need to be able to have complex problem solving, be able to use critical thinking and always be an active listener. These are just the basics of being a fire investigator and what it takes to join that field.
