New Jersey Institute of Technology Fiber Optics Reema Panjawani Fnu Saba IT120 – 001 Joan Kettering November 11, 2014 Introduction: As time is passing by we are coming across new technologies. One of these technologies is fiber optics. Fiber optics is a networking term that comes from optical fibers which is a fiber made from glass that transmits light. It is one type of cabling/medium that supports high bandwidth thus giving high speed. Fiber optics has proved to be a blessing for telephone companies when they were running out of business due to cable communication. Developed by physicists, this technology is widely used to access high speed internet today. Besides this, it has many other uses and has history involved behind the invention. …show more content…
Even though fiber optics is very efficient and better technology others. But it also has some disadvantages as well. One of them is system reconfiguration. In order to update any work area with fiber optics can take a lot more money and time because every hardware and software has to update according to the needs of fiber optics. Sometimes it’s really fine to send high speed data out from serial coaction than parallel. The modification will be need in both hardware and software and it still will create issue in transmitting data because the little differences in old programs can cause big problems. We would send something and receiver would receive something else; which would be totally unreadable. So this whole procedure of modification of everything will cost a lot of money. The second most popular problem with fiber optics is that it does not have good limitations in local area network. According to higher management it will take longer time to change everything in spite of fiber optics . In order update the current network with fiber optics will take a lot of effort and changes which managements are not willing to do. Also people are happy with what they have. Also with LANs, it would take great amount of money to change everything to fiber optics and update each and every machine with new program. Actually as a conclusion the main problem with fiber optics is that it is very expensive and it will cost efficient of money because then every hardware and software will need to be update as
fiber-optic cables that run from a major city to another major city. So if you
The first issue is that conversation for upgrading existing networks from 1-GE to 10 GE, 40 GE, and 100 GE. For large enterprises that already deploy one solution, it may be difficult and costly to go from 1 to 10 GE. This is because they would be forced to reorganize and get rid of existing calming. Though with the new cabling that would be installed there would, in the end, be less, it would be expensive to reorganize, reframe, reconnect networks and require manpower to do such tasks. Compatibility between these GE’s as well matters as without the latest version is compatible with the previous issues could arise across networks and successfully transferring data. Meaning that there could be a loss of data if there is not a secure connection across networks.
Employees of companies must consider their actions before making decisions and remember they have an ethical responsibility to the organization and use high moral standards to influence their decisions. Ethical responsibility is crucial and goes beyond personal values, it takes into account which actions provide the greatest benefit for the greatest number and produces the least amount of harm. Not all decisions are black and white, many fall into gray areas. When individuals make unethical decisions it can damage the name of the organization. In the business world the reputation of an organization is based on its integrity. A company must acquire and maintain customers to survive and grow in today’s competitive global market. Rational
The internet explosion has changed how we go about our everyday lives. The thirst for information and the need to ‘always be connected’ is spawning a new era of communications. This new era will continue to spur the need for higher bandwidth technologies to keep pace with processor performance. Because of Moore’s law, computing today is limited less by the computer’s performance than by the rate at which data can travel between the processor and the outside world. Fiber-optic solutions are replacing copper-based solutions, which can no longer meet the bandwidth and distance requirements needed for worldwide data communications [3]. Over the last decade, optical communication technologies have migrated steadily from long-haul backbones to the network edge, invading metropolitan area networks (MANs) and campus-level ...
Being a government research project, the concept was introduced to the public, and companies were encouraged to compete for the right to develop the fibre. The in fact that multiple companies were competing for the development rights not only meant that it was cheap for the government to fund, but also that the final product would be high quality. Corning Ultimately won the developmental rights, and developed fibre optic cable into what we use today. The development of Fiber Optics has given us many benefits such as:
Fiber optic technology has opened the door to many more communication opportunities for the world today. It provides higher fidelity long distance telephone conversations, as well as secure communication systems. Today, more than 90% of the United States long-distance traffic is already carried over optical fiber; more than 15 million miles have been installed, virtually all of it using the original design.
Scientists and engineers have been able to enhance our lifestyles by understanding and using the Laws, Concepts and Principles of Optics and how they are applied in Optical Instruments. The key concepts are:
Technology surrounds almost everyone in today 's modern society. Technology is constantly changing, and advancing to make our everyday lives somewhat easier. Throughout history, people have looked for better ways to meet their needs and satisfy expectations. Technology has helped people out in many ways, such as: healthcare, education, jobs, and online shopping. Almost all goods and services rely on technology. Although technology has tons of upsides to it, it also has several downsides.
G in 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G stands for the “Generation” of the mobile network. Today, mobile operators have started offering 4G services a higher number before the ‘G’ means more power to send out and receive more information and therefore the ability to achieve a higher efficiency through the wireless network. During the time of 1G, radio signals were transmitted in ‘Analogue’ form. 2G networks on the other hand, were based on narrow band digital networks. The 3rd generation of mobile networks has become popular and users access the Internet over devices like mobiles and tablets. This means a 3G network actually allows for more data transmission and therefore the network enables voice and video calling, file transmission, internet surfing, online TV, view high definition videos, play games and much more. 4th Generation mobile networks are believed to provide many value added features.
The internet has changed fast in the last 20 years. Dial-up was a time consuming, disliked way of communicating. But now with cable internet made the internet more enjoyable. Every site you visit has advertisements to sell you the newest product. shopping is so easy to do with just a click of the mouse. Netflix and Blockbuster lets you rent a movie without leaving your home. With a click of a mouse you can find a job, who past away, and watch the news. The thought of your spouse being across the ocean for business or fighting for our country would scare anyone; but now you can see your better half on web cam to make sure they are in good health. The internet makes it easier to keep in connect with your mother and father. Having a business meeting from home or even working from home is more convent. The internet has increased consumers, put our hearts at easy, and let us work from home.
Throughout the years, there have been hundreds of inventions that have been created to change our way of life. These inventions have ranged from the beginning of time with the wheel through Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb, which had been used for years to keep houses lit. Possibly one of the greatest inventions in history that is still used today is the internet, which has made significant changes to how the day to day business is conducted. On October 29, 1969 Lawrence Roberts had created the first two nodes to travel between UCLA and SRI International.
Fiber optics is a new technology that uses rays of light instead of electricity to transmit information over optical fibers at very high speeds. The optical fibers are usually thin strands of glass that are combined into cables and used to send information and computer data in the form of pulses of light. The optical fibers provide much clearer transmission than conventional copper cable and satellite links. The world market for optical fiber continues to grow rapidly, with shipments increasing 14 percent from an estimated 7.0 million kilometers of fiber in 1990 to approximately 8.0 million in 1991. The demand for multimode fiber is predicted to continue to expand through the mid-1990s, with some market analysts indicating that 15 to 20 percent annual growth over the next three years is reasonable. Strong demand is expected for singlemode and multimode fiber to be used in cables for local area networks, telecommunications, cable television (CATV), and transoceanic fiber-optic systems.
Internet as part of the history is the most important invention around the world which connects people thru phones, satellites and cables. People all over the world have access to it as it is everyday usage, and internet becomes globally real and in demand. To mention here, the usage for permits technically for travelling or getting tickets are electronically through internet, paying bills, shopping thru nets without going out (just browsing), playing games, and mostly the merit of possibly downloading music and movies in no time (just a click).
The present technology has found its use in almost every sector making the industries, businesses and institutions to use it for their daily activities since it brings a lot of benefits.
