Location
The location of New France was North America. North America was an area colonized by France which stretched from New Foundland to Hudson Bay to the Rocky Mountains all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. All the territory was divided into 5 different colonies and those colonies were: Canada, Acadia, Hudson Bay, New Foundland(Plaisance), and Louisiana.
Why Did Settlers Come to New France?
Some settlers came for jobs and others came because either the king was going to give them money. For example “ les Filles du Roi”. “Les files du roi” were approximately 800-900 young french single woman aged 15-30 who came by themselves or were recruited by the king because there were barely any woman and the king wanted to keep populating New France. The woman themselves would find a man and see if she would get along, if so they would get married and the king would pay them to have large families. Another example some settlers also came because of their intrests in North America such as wanting to trade for spices, skills, and jewels. Settlers that were men also came bcause they needed a job or needed to make a living off of something. In the 1400`s european contries tried to find new water routs to asia which led them to the finding of the Americans.
Housing and Shelter
The homes in New France were commonly built of felled timber or rough-hewn stone, solid, stocky buildings, usually about twenty by forty feet or there abouts in size with only one doorway. The rooves were steeped pitched with a dormer window or two on either side. Also the eaves were well projecting over the walls, and behind each house there was a storage room. Most habitants had their own bake ovens set a good distance behind the house rising about 4 or 5 ft. From the ground. A lot of the time the habitant would close off a small area of land surrounding the house or the shed, barn, or storage room(etc.) with a fence of piled stones or split rails and in a cornnerhe would plant his kitchen garden. In the house on the main floor there were usually one or two rooms but never more then three. When the door was first opened it led to a huge room of the house. It opened to the parlor, dinning room, and kitchen combined, but the room was split up, with the kitchen seperated from the rest.
When most people think of the early settlement they think of the first successful settlement, Jamestown, but this was not the first settlement in the New World. The settlement at Roanoke was the first attempt to colonize the New World. The settlement at Roanoke is often referred to as the “Lost Colony” because of its unusual disappearance. The reason people often do not know about the first settlement at Roanoke because it was abandoned, forgotten, and lost. The Roanoke settlement was located on an island on the northern coast of what is now North Carolina. A few more than a hundred English men first settled the colony at Roanoke Island in 1584. The conditions were harsh and between the lack of supplies and the troubles with natives of the area the settlement was all but doomed from the start. Three years after the initial settlement was founded, in 1587, more English arrived this time there were one hundred and ten colonists that consisted not just of men, but of women and children as well. Women and children were brought to the New World so that the settlement could become a fully functioning society. Of course this idea obviously did not work out as planned. The war going on in Europe between the English and the Spanish caused a delay of more supplies and people. If there had not been a prolonged delay in the resupplying process the entire course of American history may not have been what we know it to be now. If the war had started any earlier or later then people might have known more about the original first settlement of the New World. All the evidence left when people returned to Roanoke following the war in Europe was the word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree. Historians believe these to be marks left by the Croatoan Indians...

The discovery of the Americas lead to many explorations of the New World. Spain, New England and Portugal all began their individual goals. Starting in the early 1500s France started to send ships to the New world. The early French colonies were heavily concentrated in the northern region of North America such as modern day Quebec and Maine. Unlike the Spanish colonies, French colonies were created mainly to extend trade and get revenue for France. French colonies were not self governing and ruled by the king unlike the self governing colonies English settlements.

Most of these colonist brought over were men for labor. Colonist were lucky to survive through their first winter because the Indians helped supply them the goods. Before Columbus found this land, the sea separating the New World from Europe seemed endless, and mundane. The Europeans were only interested in the land to the East. But with the New World as a new hat thrown into the ring, the Europeans tossed aside their old toy to go play with a new one. This time period of conquest over the New World was known as the Age of Exploration, and by the 1700s, they kept their pickings. Each village had a town square at its center with seats where spectators could sit.The town square was used for ceremonies and games. Each village had a circular town house with clay walls and a cone shaped bark roof about 25 feet high. This was a ceremonial lodge and was also used for shelter for the homeless. Some town houses were smaller with a slanted bark roof only about 10 feet high. The most common house had a slanted bark roof with the roof about 7 feet high these were used for individual families, it held about, four to five people in it.. Each family had a summer and winter house both were packed with mud. The summer house was often used as a guest house for when visitors came to visit. They also owned their own granary which was half open and they also had a warehouse which was open on all four sides similar to a chickee.
The English Settlement in the New World was largely the result of the Age of Exploration. The English started emigrated to the New World around the early 1600s; they settles in regions including the New England and the Chesapeake region and by the 18th century these two regions had developed their own society. These two regions had developed different political, economic and social system in their regions. The political differences were due to who governs the colony. The economic differences were due to the motives of the settlement. The social differences were due to the people who settled there, while the New England emigrated as a family, the Chesapeake emigrated with mostly male.
Compared to other countries, France’s economy is the fourth largest in the world. France is a very industrialized nation, yet it has kept some of the cultural characteristics that contribute to its old-world charm. The economy is “exceptionally diversified” (“Economic Structure”, 1). It produces everything from aircrafts to pharmaceuticals.
