The New England Primer in Relation to Great Britain and America
Catechism, also known as religious instruction, schooling or teaching coexists with historic and present educational systems. Generalizing on this dogma is the idea that historically, education had the jurisdiction to incorporate religious values into a curriculum. Secular education was not a question of right or wrong, but more of a when and how. Individuals like Benjamin Harris subconsciously disguised religious works in the form of education. The New England Primer of 1777 is his most relevant and popular creation. Colonialism helps explain why United States and Great Britain share many similarities with the Primer. Essentially, when students from either the UK or the US trained with this religious tool, both would learn that letter “N” reads, “N o a h did view the old world & new” (Austin Pg. 17). A classic component to the Puritan religion followed by a basic educational necessity for reading and writing. A high stress is placed on morals, beliefs and one’s religion which is fine but that starts to leak into the cracks of the democracy component associated with UK’s governing system. Another point to draw is what differentiates “other principal religions represented in Great Britain” from the almost bolded religion of Christianity. As a result, students are breed to be more uniformed. The excerpt “A Description of New England” by: John Smith is a very interesting and descriptive work about life in the New England colony. The way John Smith describes what most people in the colony try to do, which includes converting non believers to Christians and how he himself had experienced the good days and bad days of life in the colony. John Smith’s description of what life was like when the colony was first founded is astonishing, because with very little to start out with, the people of the colony made it their dusty to convert the non believers to believers, and how they would strive to discover new things, and to build the settlement even bigger. During the 1700's, people in the American colonies lived in very distinctive societies. While some colonists led hard lives, others were healthy and prosperous. The two groups who showed these differences were the colonists of the New England and Chesapeake Bay areas. The differentiating characteristics among the Chesapeake and New England colonies developed due to economy, religion, and motives for colonial expansion. The colonists of the New England area possessed a very happy and healthy life. This high way of living was due in part to better farming, a healthier environment, and a high rate of production because of more factories. The colonists of the Chesapeake Bay region, on the other hand, led harder lives compared to that of the colonists of New England. The Chesapeake Bay had an unhealthy environment, bad eating diets, and intolerable labor.
People from England started colonizing America. And they went there with different motivations in mind. Some were going there in order to gain a fortune and be able to live happily. Those people settled in the South and created the colony Chesapeake. Others were going to America in order to gain religious freedom from the Church of England. Those people settled in the North and created New England. The different motivations for moving to America is why the two colonies developed into completely different societies, despite the fact that they were all from the England. These differences led to sectionalism between the North and South, and eventually led to war breaking out over the morals of having slaves (The Civil War).
In “A Description of New England,” John Smith documents his time in New England while trying to persuade several audiences to travel or to fund a third expedition to the New World with him as a leader. More specifically, Smith uses certain details to entice readers of two vastly different audiences: the poor and idle, the rich and generous, and evangelists. Smith’s main motive for writing “A Description of New England” is to persuade others to allow him to have a chance to go back to the New World as a leader, since he was previously unsuccessful. Smith’s use of exaggeration further convinces his various audiences that he can easily help them gain fortune from the New World.
Many differences characterize the four regions of the English Settlements including the reason for establishment, and the resources within the colony. The reason for establishment varies between the colonies, as the colonists varied in their intentions for settlement. The Southern Colonies were established to seek natural resources and to seek wealth, while The New England colony was established for spirituality reasons: the reason to glorify God. In comparison, the Middle Colonies were established as a way for people of diverse cultures to settle down, and the backcountry was established as a place for families, Germans, and Scottish- Irish people to live within. With sounds of youthful laughter, conversations about the students’ weekends, and the shuffling of college ruled paper; students file into their classrooms and find their seats on a typical Monday morning. As the announcements travel throughout the school’s intercoms, the usual “Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance” becomes no longer usual but rather puzzling to some students. “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, indivisible, with liberty, and justice for all.” Confusion passes through some of the student’s minds. With the reoccurrence of “God” in the backdrop of American life, the relationship between church and state has become of little to no matter for American citizens just as it has with American students. While congress makes no law respecting an establishment of religion, the term “freedom of religion” presents itself to no longer be the definition of “free”, while also having its effects on debates today. According to Burt Rieff, in Conflicting Rights and Religious Liberty, “Parents, school officials, politicians, and religious leaders entered the battle over defining the relationship between church and state, transforming constitutional issues into political, religious, and cultural debates” (Rieff). Throughout the 20th century, many have forgotten the meaning of religion and what its effects are on the people of today. The New England colonies developed a close-knit homogeneous society and a thriving mixed economy of agriculture and commerce. They developed this by creating a group called the New England Confederation. This focused on the protection of the people in the colony in the event of enemies trying to attack them. On page 49, it says “The primary purpose of the confederation was defense against foes or potential foes, notably the Indians, the French, and the Dutch.” They created this as a safety net for the New England colonies. Every part of the New England colonies had two votes, it didn’t matter on the size of the colonies. The ran it as their own because the king of the time didn’t care much for the colonies.
The pilgrims who settled in New England were in search of religious freedoms which was a major reason for them to leave England. These people believed that no one should be persecuted because of their religious beliefs. Some Protestants wanted to break away from the Anglican church while others wanted to be completely separate. Since there were many reasons for leaving England, there were many reason to go to America and set up the New England colonies. Another main reason for people such as farmers, craftsmen and traders to travel to America was to establish an all around better life. The author John Smith, a pilgrim who arrived to the Americas, wrote a description of the new land in his book “ A Description of New England ”. In this book Smith shows a wonderful world of vast food and pleasure. Also, William Bradford another pilgrim who arrived to Plymouth on the coast of Massachusetts, wrote a book called “ Of Plymouth Plantation ” in which he describes what really happened, how the pilgrims actually lived. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast both authors and their books. John Smith wrote about the wonderful place the New World was, on the other hand, William Bradford wrote about the realities and difficulties of the New World.
My posting is on The New England Primer. The New England Primer was a textbook with images, prayers, teachings about the Bible, and alphabets that rhymed. The textbook was for children, so they could learn and understand the meanings and teachings of the Bible. Also, The New England Primer teaches the children about religion, morals, and wrongdoings. In America during this time, The New England Primer was the most used textbook in schools. This book helped teach Americans about what the Puritans value, their ideals, and what they believe in. The Primer contains small images with words to the right of them to explain the meaning behind the pictures. For example, there is an image of the Bible. The members of the United Kingdom are subjected to posters in every street that read “Strength through unity, unity through faith” this motto is repeated consistently throughout the course of the movie. It is their justification for experimenting and killing Muslims, gays and “terrorists” from their society, they hold the opinion that diversity is a threat to their control, this idea has been translated to society with members fearing to be different, a quote from Evey being “ I remember when different became dangerous.” Whilst the extermination of these minority groups is obviously a terrible and corrupt thing, the use of mass communication has brainwashed the opinions and values of society. Faith and the belief in god have now become an extremely important aspect of life, this is because of the influence of the government. The general population now holds the belief that war and disease are not a part of their existence, because the country officially recognizes the authority of the one Christian God, however their perception of god and his message has become twisted by those in power. Although Boston and Newport are located along the East Coast of the United Sates, they are miles apart, both literally and figuratively, in social, economic and climatically diversities. In Boston, Massachusetts every day is unpredictable and chaotic while Newport, North Carolina is best described as quiet and uneventful.
When the colonists came to America they brought with them their culture and the way they educated their children reflected that. The first colonists were very religious people and their curriculum was very faith-based. It complimented the instruction they received at church and home. As immigrants flooded into the country, life changed dramatically. As the population spread west, the typical family and social dynamics rapidly changed. People became widely dispersed, and the church’s authority and influence was no longer as important. People soon realized the way they were used to educating their children needed to adapt to their new way of life.
