The careers I have researched are obstetrics and gynecology physician (OB GYN), neonatologist, and emergency physician. These three careers will make it possible for me to work in the job setting I have longed for, a hospital. As a child, I always knew I wanted to help people by saving their lives, and all of these careers can make my dreams achievable. Research on these three careers includes education, pay, job skills, employment, typical day, and job aptitude. My first career is an OB GYN. The typical education for an OB GYN is about 12 years. Neonatal nurses are a vital part of the neonatal care team. These are trained professionals who concentrate on ensuring that the newborn infants under their care are able to survive whatever potential life threatening event they encounter. They treat infants that are born with a variety of life threatening issues that include instances of prematurity, congenital birth defects, surgery related problems, cardiac malformations, severe burns, or acute infection. Neonatal care in hospitals was always done by the nursing staff but it did not officially become a specialized medical field until well into 1960s. This was due to the numerous advancements in both medical care training and related technology that allowed for the improved treatment and survival rate of premature babies. According to the March of Dimes, one of every thirteen babies born in the United States annually suffers from low birth weight. This is a leading cause in 65% of infant deaths. Therefore, nurses play a very important role in providing round the clock care for these infants, those born with birth defects or other life threatening illness. In addition, these nurses also tend to healthy babies while their mothers recover from the birthing process. Prior to the advent of this specialized nursing field at risk newborn infants were mostly cared for by obstetricians and midwives who had limited resources to help them survive (Meeks 3).
Neonatal nursing is a very challenging field which requires a lot of education before you can become certified. A person’s education has to be backed up by many certifications before even coming close to holding a baby. The occupation that I would like to research is Physical Therapy. I personally chose Physical Therapy because I have experienced it myself and I believe I would enjoy doing this for the rest of my life. Physical Therapy is in Health Sciences cluster. In the Health Sciences field Physical Therapy falls under Therapeutic Services and Health Informatics. When I did my Nebraska Career Connections interests test I scored the highest in Therapeutic Services. I then filled out a skills inventory and it ranked number four on that assessment. Considering I scored highly in both occupations means that this occupation is good for me as of right now.

Working under pressure may seem like a lot but after so much experience, it gets easier. Soon to be obstetricians tend to go to college for eight to ten years and work very long hours. The undergraduate degree that I am going to go for is Biomedical Engineering so that I have a well-paying job as a backup if I fail to get into medical school. For this class you have to take your basic science and math courses, as well as your basics that you must take for any degree such as English Composition 1 and 2. These can be very tedious, but they must be taken. With so many jobs in the world it’s so hard to choose just one. Do you want to be an athlete or a doctor? You have to decide wisely because once you choose turning back is a difficult task. Being a surgeon is the job I want to have as an adult. Being a surgeon may be hard but in the long run it’s worth it. This career caught my attention as a kid. I would always watch these ER shows and see these crazy tasks that they would have to deal with, and through all that they’d be calm and collective. Seeing a surgeon save someone’s life inspires me to want to do the same thing. If I would have the ability to save someone’s life, it would allow me to see the world in a whole new way. Every year more than 15 million people in the U.S. have surgery. That being said the need for surgeons will never decrease, as there always will be a surgery to perform.
