Neonatal Nursing Career
Many reasons have led me to pursue a career in the medical field as a Nurse Practitioner, specializing in neonatology. In general, this type of nursing career takes passion, commitment, diligence and teamwork. Nurse Practitioners, much like RNs, are healthcare workers specializing in patient care. As a Nurse Practitioner, on the job you have many such roles, including, advanced skills in patient assessment; prescribing medications; monitoring patient status; performing and assisting with procedures; consulting and collaborating with other patient care providers; and counseling and educating patients and their families on how to manage their conditions. However, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, provide advanced nursing care, specializing in caring for full and pre-term infants who are critically ill or premature. (Journal of advanced nursing, 2014). State regulations limit independence for practitioners in Florida. The nurse practice laws and regulations are specific to each state; in the state of Florida, there is restricted practice. This law restricts the ability of a nurse practitioner to engage in at least one element of NP practice. Although NP hold a state certification and hold Masters degrees, they are still required supervision. They require physician’s sign-off on treatment plans and cannot prescribe controlled substances. The Code of Ethics is part of the foundation of nursing. Nurse’s acknowledgement of the need for a code of ethics for the profession was the motivation for which the American Nurses Association (ANA) was created.
