Understanding on the Comparisons
Perusing various Canadian literature and comparing them to my past experiences in child protection enlightened me to the various differences in practices between First world and third world as created and influenced by western concepts and practices. First and as mentioned previously, social workers are bestowed with great power that it must be used with caution. The use of power by the social worker contributes and influences how the interaction between the client and worker will unravel (Gladstone, Dumbrill, Leslie, Koster, Young, & Ismaila, 2012). In Canada, poverty is seen in conjunction with other social issues. In Third world countries, poverty is perceived to be the manifestation and the effect of neoliberalism and globalization where all other social ills burgeon. Upon contemplating this generic interpretation, however, prevents the different conception of the interconnectedness of social issues. This proposition does not dismiss the reality that poverty is the root of a lot of social problems. The use of approaches in solving social problems in Canada where the sources of social problems are more diverse is entirely different from the Philippine context where social problems are deeply rooted, and solutions are more applicable to alleviating poverty (Aspalter, 2014). In both countries, the results of neoliberalism are the same as social inequality widens and the richest segment of society gains more wealth (Piketty, 2014 as cited in Spolander et al., 2016). It was opined that the profession’s inability to develop critical public leadership and express alternative future does not bode well for the future of the profession nor its intent to eradicate social injustice (Spolander et al.,
